Homemade leather Goban being used on a camping trip. Pros; nice natural look, rolls up, stones do not slide, homemade and compostable. Cons; stones do not click, edges roll, and needs a stick to roll around so it does not get creases.

I your board is made of leather shouldn't your stones be made of bone?

A year ago, we were discussing a set we found online with stones made of fossilized rhino horn or something. :D

What kind of leather did you use? There used to be some guy on Ebay who made one out of deerhide. Yours looks like it must be nice and soft and pliable, too.

Rhino horn -- hmmmm, I like it. The leather was a scrap from the leather store. It is a slightly rough suede, I suppose, not smooth. The leather is from a cow, nothing exotic. I have seen a beautiful Goban made from different dyed leather strips on the internet. Very attractive.

I am thinking I would like to make one from old denim. The faded color would takes lines well, and it would roll up easily. What do u think?

It looks almost the exact same shades of brown that my own half-board (I use it for tsumego setting). Mine was indeed from scrap cow suede, the kind we can't use at TFP because it's just too thick for shoes.

On the reverse I drew a 9x9 board to replay on a "real" board the 9x9 pro games I have. I also have (from a scrap piece coming from the scrap resulting from this :D) a 5x5 board where I occasionally set a problem from Masaaki's 5x5 book.

Or white shells and black pebbles?

(Mind you, when I lived near a beach that had shells and pebbles, I only found enough for a 5x5 game. You'd think with a beachful of stones, there *must* be thousands of the right size and shape, but it was very difficult to spot them.)
