Thanks for posting this, vash3g.

Does anyone know what the daily schedule typically looks like? For example, the US Open is a popular congress event I hear, and the website indicates that this means 90 minute games each day. But what time are these games?

And if there are other activities, what times do those happen? Is there typically a formal schedule?

Traditionally the US Open games are played 9:00am on Sun, Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri, Sat.

Wednesday is a day off, and many people visit the host city then. Often the Congress organizers arrange for trips on that day. For hardcore go players there is usually a separate 1-day 4-round tournament.

Afternoons are lectures for most, and meetings for AGA organizers, and NAIM for those who qualify. Evenings are various other go-related activites like crazy go night and pair go. Saturday evening is the closing / award presentation ceremony.

EDIT: NAIM is apparently evenings.

The schedule is pretty similar every year, so you can look at last year's handbook for a good idea:

Kirby, the Open is 90 minutes for each player with 30 second byo yomi, so it typically runs right up to lunch, and occasionally longer. 4D plus get 120 minutes of basic time, I believe.

There are pro reviews, simuls, and seminars available throughout the day. Additionally, you can play impromptu ranked games whenever you like.

It's great fun, and I hope you can make it, and hope to meet you there.

NAIM takes place at 7PM during the evening. There is one night off for pair go (also at night).

When you get as far as processing payment, it is https, so no worries on that front.

Register away, peoples!

And please, for all of those that I've p***** off on the forums, let me know if you're coming, too. That way I can remember to bring my running shoes.

I hope to see all of you there (and also for my personal safety).

It is a little heart-wrenching that I live 20 minutes away from the venue but may not be able to attend.

Hi jyka, this depends on the individual and groups.
During the US Open (in the morning to noon) and other tournaments, it's mostly quite serious and quiet.
Between tournaments, some people play more Go, others spend time with their friends and family,
so it depends. :)

EGF is a bit stronger than equivalent AGA ranks. When you register online, I'd bump it up two if I were you.

Ambiance is affected by location. I am told there are plenty of bars within walking distance of the campus, though the campus itself is dry. So, if you want to party, no probs. You can also find others to play go, cards including poker, board games, etc... Congress is what you make of it.

There is a shuttle from the airport.

I hope to see you there!

AGA results are not currently suitable for the EGF ranking system, because of the disparity in rank. E.g. an AGA 3 dan would probably be only about 1-2 dan in Europe, so it is unfair to count results against such players as if they had rating 2300.

This also means you should probably register 2 ranks stronger than your European rank.
