Okay,

I've just been kicked from KGS for swearing once, I did not get any warning. Anybody has anybody experience with this? What is the estimated time until I can log on again?

Strange - I swear all the time when I am playing on KGS and I NEVER get banned.

Of course, I really do not see how they could hear me...

Hehehe,

Luckily it was only a short ban. I just tried it, and I am able to log in again. So the answer to my question: 3 hour ban.

Warnings are usually given when admins believe that a new player on KGS may genuinely be confused about what is acceptable on KGS (e.g., complaining extensively about an escaper in the EGR).

In this instance, given that you've played on KGS for awhile, it's reasonable to believe that you know that swearing is not acceptable. If you're angry, I recommend not typing until calm and balance returns. Swearing on KGS is generally counter-productive and makes the situation worse.

Oh I would gladly talk about the situation with you, but this forum does not allow the words that came out of my hands either. From your reaction I see you were not involved, because my swearing was nothing of an angry nature. ;)

It was a slip of the fingers, I did not realise the words I used could be interpreted as 'swearing'.

Apart from that, I would suggest to warn someone before kicking them, because if you knew me you would know I am as huggable as a puppy. It was never my intention to swear and I would never consciously detract from other people's playing experience.

But, thanks for the 'un-ban' and I will use appropriate wording in the future.

As we all know, slips of the finger can cost you a won game very easily.

KGS is an openly hostile environment both from the players there and the admins. Dont use the chat feature ever and you wont have to deal with the admins, or only chat in private. And the fact that most players will decline to play makes this site a big waste of time. It feels heavily stuck up there, you would be better off playing at kurnik go or yahoo go, or even using wuzheng.me, which is a correspondence go server, but many of the players there respond fairly rapidly without a time limit on games, and the players there are mostly mainland Chinese, so the players are very interesting to play, I highly recommmend this site.

Even without chatting KGS is light years better than these two.

I disagree with you on this one, Zazen.

Although almost everybody agrees the KGS-admins act to tough (at times), I respect the work they're doing.

Furthermore, many members of this forum are active on KGS and I enjoy chatting, playing and reviewing games with them (for example, Oren, Skydyr and Boidhre) and others. Give love and you will receive love in return.

The kibitz is always fun. One term tha's now part of my vocabulary is the 'sente kibitz'; the kibitz that is too awesome to be ignored.

"I like yahoo go" may be the least credible thing you can say about the game.

Actually, there is a good case to be made about multi-game sites like yahoo games or kurnik. They give Go exposure among gamers which servers like KGS can never hope to match! Of course, once people get solidly 'exposed' - they should switch to KGS or any of the more serious Go servers. But the fact remains - Go community could all benefit if people were to loby for improvement rather than trash those servers.

I agree that the KGS server is good that it exists, but due to the arrogance of some of the site admins and players there my experience for the most part has been negative. I stand by the argument that there is no freedom of speech there, ever, and dont ever use the chat rooms unless you have a specific problem with the site, which in case ask an admin in private. Given that it is free, take it or leave it. The main reason I dont use it, KGS, is it is time consuming to obtain any game to play. It does allow a person to review games, so that is good for learning. The fact that the android is $14 raises eyebrows. And as far as getting players to play right away, yahoo go and kurnik go is far easier than KGS. As it stands right now, for serious players, I believe that wuzheng.me and dragongoserver.net are neck in neck, although the wuzheng.me is easier to use on any device, and gomatches.com is another good site in Austria. While kaya.gs is a nice looking site, it doesnt experience too much activity and mostly only high ranked players on there with a lot of nonsense chatting going on, best to go elsewhere such as the previous sites. Perhaps the best thing Kiseido could do is to eliminate their chat feature as the admins there dont like talking. I find it interesting that Kiseido as a company seems to be known for its bad attitude, they are also difficult to order books from, fortunately their are other sources for go learning than kiseido alone.

KGS and Kiseido are no longer affiliated.

That's nice. I dont really care. KGS and Kiseido the publisher are both irritating. Ill make sure to avoid both in the future.

Not that I disagree with your sentiment or anything, but... Given that people are chatting incessantly in most of the rooms I ever go to (EGR is an obvious example) - your above statement is simply false.

Having said that - 'freedom of speech' is often the shoulder many people are crying on after breaking the rules, and an buzz-word for the idea that you can say anything, anywhere, without consequences. Both approaches are very mislead and show misunderstanding or lack of maturity. Each context has its own set of rules about what can and cannot be said - and then consequences if the rules have been broken. For example: try using your 'freedom of speech' in an airport and make jokes about a bomb in your suitcase. See you in 20 years or so.

On the other side - a lot of the 'rules' on a private and informal server like KGS are open to interpretation, and some admins interpret them more strictly than others. Some admins, being human, might interpret them too strictly. Some might not be strict enough. But that's life for you! Its good to speak about it (otherwise nothing ever gets changed) byt to whine about it like that is not productive.

Live and let live!

Bantari, I think multi-game sites are great for introducing people, but yahoo is a terrible site to play go. I suppose I haven't been on since 2006...things haven't gotten better, have they?

I figured Bantari had a point - not that yahoo was a quality go site - but that it was a way to attract people to go.

A lot more people know about yahoo games than about KGS or IGS.

Kind of like when you go to a bookstore and see a poorly written go book for beginners. It's cool that it's there, because it may expose someone to go for the first time. After they get hooked, they can drain all of their money on more serious go book vendors.

What Bantari said. Two common errors:

( freedom of speech ) means ( Unlimited freedom of speech ). This is false. (See Bantari's example, or "fire!/gun!" in a movie theater.)

Not ( Unlimited freedom of speech ) means ( No freedom of speech ). This is also false. (Logic error, or, as Bantari said, maybe lack of maturity, or both.)

I don't know what you're talking about.
Maybe you had a bad experience with them, but I have made multiple purchases with Kiseido,
from different parts of the world, including a direct sale from Mr. Bozulich in person,
and I have had nothing but good experience with them.

I have to disagree with this sentiment! What do you think freedom means? I agree that freedom of speech is not (and should not be) protected on go servers, you cannot reasonably believe that it exists. It does not.

What do YOU think freedom means? You think it means it's OK to scream "Fire!" in a crowded theater?
