Have a great game ![]() I'm going to try and be a bit more complete with my commentaries than the last couple, although not much to say here other than I like opening on 4-4 points |

@topazg Do you think that difference between your strengths will affect how you choose your moves? If so, how? @yithril Do you think that difference between your strengths will affect how you choose your moves? If so, how? |

Le sigh, playing the Chinese again. At least I have a reasonable enough record with it as Black, and I do rather like it - I can't help but feel very boring playing it again each time though @emeraldemon No idea, but I hope not - it didn't against ez4u and magicwand anyway, it just made me try a bit harder to think before moving |

A two star point opening is too boring, I prefer to have one low move in the opening for White, just personal preference. |

Hmmmm, do I do something to his side, or expand mine? I've decided to expand mine because my feeling is that the lack of komi requires Black to play with some level of initiative designed towards maximising the possible potential of his position - hopefully to encourage White to have to respond rather than vice versa. This is also the reason I've played high. I considered C11 or R9, but I think this looks fun and a bit different to my other Chinese games recently. |

@topazg C11? Also, how would you continue if black plays N4? Good game. |

@Loons: C11, or maybe C14. If White plays N4 (I assume that's what you meant), then probably Q5 even though the high-high-high shape is a bit funky .. I might look at some alternatives, but I'm resisting the urge to look up pro high chinese games ![]() @Ed: Sorry, I meant the fact that Black doesn't have komi and White does. A very obtuse way of saying what I meant, I apologise! I meant "Because Black hasn't got the komi advantage that White has, I want to be proactive in grabbing more potential for points" - does that make more sense? |

All of these points are possible depending on what you like. I like keeping Black's development in check on the bottom just because it feels like it contains him more efficiently. If I were the patient type, I'd make a corner enclosure in the upper left. |

Super normal so far. I expect him to play at the top next. Man Chinese openings are always boring ![]() |

Ok, so I made a change of my opinion for ![]()
With the response I had previously suggested, this is fairly well known probe/continuation aji, and I think because the marked stone is high, there's a lot more aji in this shape than there would be had I played low. I can't easily ignore White's approach because the following position is fairly painful for Black to have to tolerate:
So, what are the advantages I see in my move? Firstly, the shape is reasonably robust, and it makes it hard to find a really good move for White to play in the corner now:
I have no idea if my move has plenty of other weaknesses I'm missing, but it seems to me to be a more solid response than the one point jump, despite initially looking a bit woolly and slow. If I get to play again, I'll take this point, and the corner seems large and fairly secure, albeit at the cost of 4 stones to make it that way:
So, I'm taking the left now to settle as simply as possible, and will have to see what White does for his ![]()

Pincer from lower left star point stone seems natural. I thought he would take the top to expand his moyo, like K 16 or 17, but I guess he doesn't want me to have a corner enclosure. K.
B is not a normal move, but might be okay on this board. In either case my thickness is facing a good direction. His will be too. If he plays B I jump out then play out the joseki.
I thought about this, but I feel thinner as White in terms of my lower left moyo cuz of the distance between 3 and the lower left star point stone, and I feel flat at the top. Yeah, my plan in the game is that Black gets thick too, but there is a good counter tesuji to it so I feel the game is balanced. |

You ok with this one ? Ok, I can live with this - we're exchanging but it seems equal enough. He's making some nice potential on the left, and I'm doing the same on top. |
