Hello, I have recently started playing on KGS, this game got me promoted to 9k.

What are the main takeaways from this game / things I could do better? Thanks!

I am white.

Hi Alex,

:w42: is a little strange, but :w44: is terrible, unless you plan to kill everything there.

:b45: Please see toothpaste .
This local shape is a disaster for White -- you can play like this only if your plan is kill all here.

:white: 100 Same shape mistake as :w44: .

:black: 101 S13. See :b45: again.

:white: 188 Bad habit -- just connect directly at F18.

The main takeaway is that you are much stronger than your opponent. Frankly I find requests for reviews of 46-point wins to be odd. So I thought, "What does he look like when he loses?" I went to KGS Analytics to find out. However, it turns out you haven't lost so we don't know yet! (Note that in the one game that you resigned you were still leading by about 7 points, despite losing a group, when you resigned! :D ) You need stronger opponents so that you learn better the consequences of your weaknesses.

(The loss was against a computer, and I made a blunder and was frustrated, so I just resigned. I wasnt taking it seriously enough probably).
Well, I will post another game once I get up to a bit stronger opponents, but still I can learn from mistakes even when I win. :) I wouldve put up a loss game if I had one yet, but I wanted to get something up so I could read an analysis.

That said, I dont really think I'm stronger than 10k, or at least not much. When I play in person against people who say they are about 10k, it feels pretty even. And I played 4 games against a 1k with an 8 stone handicap and went 1-3. But handicap games are weird.
Also, I think my opponent knew he was behind in the endgame and lost more points making desperate moves to try and come back, which made the result a bit more lopsided than it shouldve been. But maybe I've actually improved recently!

I'll put up a close game or loss as soon as I get one.

Indeed, this was my thought at the time. I was angry at the 3-3 invasion after I had so much in the area, and wanted to kill it. I had read that the 2-4 move was the way to begin in order to kill. But then I didnt know what to do to continue, so it ended up bad.

I am really unsure about what is necessary in order to be able to kill a 3-3 invasion. I know how to play the normal joseki when it happens right away, but if I am strong in the area I feel I should kill it, and then it goes wrong.

Interestingly, I loaded the position up in Many Faces of Go, to try and play it out and try to kill. But Many Faces of Go didnt continue the position, instead it monkey jumped me in the lower left to kill the eyespace of that group there! So it seems that I left my lower left group too unsettled for a long time, and both me and my opponent made a mistake neglecting it.

Thanks again for the comments, I'll try to remember them. :)

On move 98 and 100, I am thinking that I shouldve simply played elsewhere on the board? I was trying to defend my middle right side territory, but those were vary small moves that also pushed him through my position.

Youre right, move 188 F18 wouldve been sente, and my move was a 1 point gote move instead!

Thanks again for the comments, I'll try to remember them. :)

I will pick first one that bothered my eye...
20 and 22 was sente because black answered.
If it was someone strong then you would be behind after that move.

No. F18 is still gote. I never said it's sente. Both your move and F18 are gote, but F18 is better. :)

One difference: your :white: 188 made :black: 189 sente.
But if you connected directly at F18,
then the same :black: 189 would be gote.

Interesting. Yes, black seems overconcentrated after those moves. We played out the standard 3-3 invasion joseki there, but black might not have needed to do so there.

On the other hand, I'm not sure what else I couldve done at that point other than 20-22. Maybe I needed to continue down the right side instead, and give black part of the corner? 20-22 felt important to me so that my corner would be alive.
