Post subject:  Even Game Against 3 Dan

So my rank on the KGS bumped up to 3d? since I last was able to play. As nice as it was to say I was a provisional 3 dan, I knew I wasn't that strong. Even so, I played my best in this even game against a 3 dan. The game went well at first. Sure, I made a mistake in joseki at :b11:, but I was able to get an okay result. For the joseki, apparently N4 or O3 are the common continuations. Also, I think I should have played the M2 atari at :b21: instead of pushing first. By the approach at :w52: I felt things were fairly even.

The problem came when I overextended and ended up losing my corner group starting with the cut at :b79:. The fight was tough, and I knew I was well behind when I lost, but I wanted to see how much I could do before I resigned. After all, I don't get to play 3 dans every day. By the end of the game I was able to save some of my stones lost in the first fight (obviously at a cost) and played okay endgame. Sadly, I misread one last thing in yose and resigned due to the mistake.

Comments on any part of the game are much appreciated.

Thanks for the comments Bill. Is there a better joseki for the upper right corner? I wanted to try to reduce white's potential on the right, but perhaps it would have been better to pincer and try to build from my own enclosure on the top?

I am inclined to play the underneath attachment, but you can certainly make a case for a pincer. :)

First in the lower right. As Bill said, just connecting looks reasonable. You get 4 as a ladder breaker and you will want to play 6 rather than 'a' as in the game.

Black 27 is a mistake in direction IMHO. White is too strong in the lower right. You do not want to play there. I would be inclined to jump to 2 below. If White plays 3, jump again. What do you think?

Black 59 is again in the wrong direction. The right side is uninteresting. It is open on the bottom and you have made a strong shape at the top. I would close the corner with 1 below. If White extends on top with 2, it is time to put the marked stone to use in disrupting the left side. How would you like to use that stone? (If White tries to close the left side, Black extends up to J17, threatening to invade the top.)
