Post subject:  15k Game - What to focus on ?

I played a handicap game with 12k. Though I eventually won the game, I think I had much better advantage after the opening. Can someone review the game and give some good advice to me ?
I have been playing go for about 3 months.
Thanks!

The one thing that occurs to me when looking over that is that both you and your opponent need to learn some basic shapes. Many of your moves did not follow sound principles. I would recommend looking over some of the beginners exercises in SL.

Hi saisandeep,

Welcome to Go.

Some basic shapes:

:b6: F4.

[go]$$Bc
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . O 2 . . . . . . .
$$ | . . 1 . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . X . 3 . . . , .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ -----------------------[/go]

:b10: K17.

[go]$$Wc
$$ -------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . 1 X . . . 4 . .
$$ | . . . O . 2 . . . , . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . 3 . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . .[/go]

:b12: OK.

:b14: OK.

:b16: , :b18: No. IF you play :b16: , IF you make the exchange ( :b16: - :w17: ),
THEN your follow-up is:

[go]$$Bc ( There are other options for :b9: )
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . O O . . . . . . .
$$ | . . X . . . . . . . .
$$ | . . . X X X . 9 . X .
$$ | . . . 1 O O 3 . . . .
$$ | . . O 2 6 5 4 7 . . .
$$ | . . . . . 8 . . . . .
$$ -----------------------[/go]
IF you don't play the above sequence starting with the G3 hane,
THEN the exchange ( :b1: - :w2: ) is bad for Black.

:b22: - :w23: Bad habit: you force White to (1) make good shape and (2) make 100% life.

:b24: - :w25: You help White, again.
If you had played the sequence ( see :b16: above ),
then D9 ( where :w25: was played ) becomes a good spot to ATTACK :wc: :wc: :

:b26: Good ( see :b10: note above ).

:b29: - :w30: See above notes at :b16: .

:b38: Very strange (bad). Blocking at Q3 is very natural, and good for Black.
Basic shape:

$$ . . . . 1 2 . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . |
$$ --------------------[/go]

:b40: Almost a pass. What are you doing ?! ( Rhetorical question. :) )
Still, blocking at Q3 is very big.

:w41: This move is huge. ( More than 20 points ? )

:b42: R3.

saisandeep -- I quickly scanned up to around :b62: ( :b62: itself is bad shape ).

As DrStraw mentioned, both B and W had many basic shape problems.
( Numerous, throughout the entire game. )
Please review these notes so far.
It'll take some time for you to digest and learn about these basic shapes and techniques.
A very long adventure.

Some comments on the endgame. :)

Go to move Black 166.

Main focus: Is this move necessary?

I estimated the score and I was already winning, so looked for some safe moves, hence played it without reading that it is not necessary. :) Actually 30sec is much more than the time required to understand that the group is safe.

Thanks a lot for your insights. I find the new variations really good! I will start working on end game.

Thank you so much! It is taking some time to understand the moves, but they are making sense. :)
