Post subject:  7k vs 7k, I'm black

Hello,

I haven't posted much but need to start having my games analyzed so thought I'd give this a try. Right now I am looking for areas to improve on. If you'd concentrate on the more pervasive or systemic issues all the better.

Thank you in advance for the time spent and the advice given on my game.

Regards,

A few thoughts on the opening.
Move 5: The kick is best resrved for when you have a stone on the k16/l16 area. Otherwise your opponent can take an ideal 3 point extension. More, the kick from the low stone leaves you feeling kinda akward later in the game. Most often reviews of bad kicks come from 4.4 stone kicks, but this kick, while it does seal up the corner, feels a bit small. Consider instead attaching under the stone.

Move 8: Not your move, but it's worth noting, this is wrong. White should extend one further.

Move 11: Probably not your best joseki choice, since it seems a little overly passive, allowing white's side to solidify.
Move 12-14: I don't like the jump up for white here. Probably should have just pulled back. While this is joseki, it's worth noticing that your gains are mostly influential (4th line stones, even with the 3rd line descent, leave a lot of room for reduction) wheras if white had just played a large knight's back, they would have had a fairly solid side.

Move 15: Good idea, reducing the side is what you want to do now while it's still open.
move 17: Bad idea. Hane is the traditional answer to being attached to. Can you tell me which way you should hane?
move 19: Worse idea. White's proper answer is to cut, and invite you into the fight. They're strong all over here, and you're weak. Don't pick a fight without some strength to rely on.
Move 20: White's so nice to you! Be sure to thank the nice man.
move 21: This is certainly one way to thank him! Weak black shape, strengthens his stones, reinforces his wall, all the things white would like to do, you just did for him! Time to run.
move 23: Don't play this. Let me ask you something:

$$ | . . . 2 . .

Is 3 usually a good idea? Don't play an already peeped cutting point. Even if he couldn't put your tiger's mouth stone in atari, this would be completely bad.

Move 27: There's a better sequence for you, still bad, that starts with j18. Can you find it? It's still bad for you, but if you're going to overplay, you might as well get some profit out of it before running.

move 29: You just threw away 27. This is the sort of move that costs you any profit 27 might have gained you.

move 31-34: Wrong play by white.
move 35: Good idea! Taking the 3.3 invasion hurts white's only corner, great!
move 39: Not the best choice in this case. This is a variant on a joseki, but there are better sequences for you with all your strength here.
move 49: Not sente, but there's another move locally that is, and is much more harsh than this. Can you find it?

Past here, it's all reading/misreading errors, at least that I can see, and I'm sure you can spot those yourself.

Hope that helps

With apologies to CSam, I've got to disagree with his comment about move 35. The invasion is a bad move here; you should have played F4.

Taking the corner is trivial. It has always been there. Indeed, by playing the hoshi, white voluntarily conceeded the 3-3 point to you. Taking what he is willing to give you is nothing. You must take what he wants for himself. :rambo:

The hoshi stone is a high stone. It wants to move out. The way to hurt it most is to lock it in. Play F4. Then white must immediately resort to submissive moves to stay alive. You get an outside wall, and probably sente, which you use to play L4.

I stand corrected.
