Hello, this is a game I played against Phelan. The beginning was hard, for white. Where did he messed up? How could he do better?

Too soon. Black is low on top, so there's no danger of a moyo. The top side is also cramped with black stones. Basically top is a barren wasteland right now.

This would be better (or some other approach, doesn't have to be one space high). Approaching a 3-4 corner is pretty big, and you should have a much easier time of any fighting on this side, away from all those messy black stones.

edit: I did not remember correctly. White gets sente in the trick variation, so disregard that variation in the top right (but you should remember the trick, it's useful, and I doubt anyone under 1d will refute it. I don't think even 3-4ds will consistently refute it)
