Hello, I'm new to Go, but I have been a Chess enthusiast for years. Sometime ago, I read about Go on a Chess site, so I started learning the rules online, and now I'm hooked  . Right now I'm using the book Go for Beginners, and have been playing with GoPanda and GNU Go. If anyone has any advice for a new Go player, I would be glad to hear it.

Hello! As jts said have fun. Focusing on the basics is your quickest route to improvement right now. Make sure your groups have a base, keep your stones connected and your opponents cut, try not to let your groups be sealed into the corner/side, watch your cut points and don't be afraid to tenuki.(play elsewhere[don't know how new you are ]) If you can't see your opponent doing something nasty, don't worry about it. Its up to him to prove he can and will be a learning experience.Go problems are another good way to improve and Graded Go Problems for Beginners vol 1 is a decent place to start. And of course play games. And keep an eye on this forum, good stuff is common here. Most of "my" advice is the combination of good advice I've seen/gotten from other members of this forum.  If you like books here are some good ones. Learn to play Go Vol 1-5 by Janice Kim Opening Theory made Easy by Otake Hideo Perhaps when your nearing in on the DDK-->SDK(Double digit Kyu-->Single Digit Kyu) boundary you might check these out. Elementary Go Series(Theory books) Get Strong at<topic> Series(problem books) You should probably defer to others for book recommendations though. I have a tendency to read whatever the heck I want without regard to its target rank range. I've discovered recently that one of the first books I bought was actually on Go Game Gurus list of books for 3dan. "Breakthrough Attacking Power", I enjoyed it regardless, but probably didn't take away a whole lot. |

Greetings, Twitchy gives very good advice.I would just like to expand on his point about cutting. It is important to only cut groups that are dead. There is no point in cutting live groups. And even then one has to decide if it is really necessary. I was also taught by Juan Go that if one has time to play Igo then half of that time should be spent on tsumego.I have found the best book for me to be 1001 life and death problems , published by kiseido. Welcome to L19. I'm a former chess player also. Once you get seriously into go, chess will seem boring and simplistic. The best way to improve, IMHO, is post a game in the game analysis forum. |

Also a former chess enthusiast! Welcome! EDIT: And find a club in real life nearby, playing online certainly works, but in person is just much more rewarding... as people will take an interest in your progress. |

Welcome to go! Since you wanted advice: 1) Try not to let your pride interfere with your enjoyment of the game. That is, don't take losing too seriously and don't respond to trash talk. 2) If you can, find a friend who will learn and play go with you. One of the best parts of go is its handicap system, so it will be okay even if you learn at a different pace. 3) If you have a job or go to school, don't let go take over your life. It is seriously addictive. Try not to stay up all night watching Baduk TV or playing go online. 4) Seek help from stronger players in reviewing your games. KGS (gokgs.com) is a nice go server for doing this. KGS has rooms like "The Study Room", "Beginners' Room" and "The KGS Teaching Ladder", where stronger players are willing to help others for free. |
