Hey everyone,

Short-time lurker on the forum and returning player (albeit very low level!).

Used to play about 10 years ago and have recently decided to get back into this fascinating game. Will get around to registering on a server to play some online games and hopefully get myself to a local club for some face to face opponents.

Any suggestions as to a good server for a UK player? I used to play a very little bit on KGS but open to suggestions for others to try.

Anyway - thanks for a great forum - lots to digest here :)

Welcome, Ben :-)

the renewed OGS http://www.online-go.com (merged with Nova.gs). No Java required, it’s all in HTML5, beautiful interface, Fischer time, turn-based or live games … tournaments … and meanwhile quite a few games to watch also.

Greetings, Tom

KGS is still pretty good.

There is IGS still around as well as the massive Korea based servers you can play on like wbaduk and tygem.

There are lot of options. :)

Thank you for the warm welcome and server suggestions. I'll hopefully get some games in soon so I can get some idea of current playing strength. Have started playing some games against pc using v11 of Many Faces of Go but need to start playing real opponents. Meanwhile I'm catching up on reading books and studying tsumego...so far so enjoyable!

Welcome! I've yet to delve into online play....I'm a bit chicken to tell you the truth. I want to get the basics down a little more first then Ill hop on and embarrass myself lol. So I'm sure Ill see you around.

This is a life-long, never-ending process. Even some top pros are still polishing their basics
(at a completely different level from us, of course. :) )
Absolutely no reason to wait. For anything. Dive into it ASAP. Enjoy.

Rowen, you can start with 321go.org (though just now it seems to be down, hopefully it will be up again soon). That site comes with a course and tons of exercises.

Hi from the West Midlands.

KGS has a specifically British room, and some clubs have their own rooms.

As you probably know, you can find out about local clubs from the British Go Association
web site at http://www.britgo.org/clubs/map (which is now working again).

Good Luck!

Hi Thirdfogie,

Thanks :) I've rejoined the BGA after a 10 year or so absence and will hopefully be able to get along to the Winchester Club on a Wednesday before too long.

I'm still finding my way around the stickies and FAQ stuff so hopefully I'll be able to get my head around posting sgf files etc. to enable game review/comment etc.
