I just read the thread about people wondering what happened to Jasiek. The thread was locked by Joaz, citing the rule that such questions should not be public.
Well... I just wanted to voice my opinion that I disagree with this rule. Or at least - there should be exceptions.
I do think that there are forum-management related issues that can and should be discussed openly. I can understand that not everybody is interested, but a sub-forum might be nice for such stuff to keep it out of everybody's hair.
A good example of such public topic is the Jasiek issue. He is not your common troll who everybody is happy to see go and nobody cares why they are gone. Controversial as he might be, there are not many people who contributed more positive and important stuff to this forum than he did. So I would assume there are a number of people wondering what happened to him. Is he banned, or isn't he? For how long? For what? Sure, you can encourage everybody interested to contact the admins directly, and then get a personal note from said admin explaining the issue. Or not. A question IF/WHY was he banned might be a public issue in this case.
Without talking about such things in the open, there is very little chance that the community will ever get any input into such matters. Maybe this is good, but in the long run - it breeds resentment. Maybe nobody cares... After all - this IS a private forum, so the owners have the right to handle it any way they want. No argument here. But just a thought - every now and then, a little openness might not be a bad thing. It usually makes for a much healthier environment when there is an outlet for such 'inappropriate' questions and even some occasional venting.
But what do I know.... Rock on!
