I need a little help, please!

Hello colleagues,

I am leaving for The Netherlands in Tuesday to work as a nanny there in a lovely family with 4 children. It was a bit of a luck cause I have grown up in a family with 4 children as well and me being the oldest, so I hope I won't have problems with so many kids.

My only problem is that my flight to Amsterdam, is a bit complicated because I need to fly to Paris first and then to take a plane for Amsterdam. Since this is the first time I travel abroad and the first time I am traveling by a plane, I would like kindly to ask you, to give me few tips, and also please, to tell me how to manage to get on my plane for Amsterdam once I get to the Paris aiport because I have heard that the Paris airport is a bit scary, it is very large and one might easily get lose in it and I do not want that to happen.

Also, will you please tell me if there are Go Clubs in Amsterdam or the area around it and where to find them?

Well, my recollection of the Paris airport was not so intimidating. I don't know how much flying you've done, but I actually have more frustrating memories of other airports. So don't be too scared.

Hi - I only went through Paris once but I was fine too (other than the 8 hour wait). I do like to print off airport maps before I go sometimes (and have a look at their website). It would help make life easier if the flights were such that your luggage gets transferred automatically from one flight the other - so ask when you book. And in the end there will be lots of staff/other folk around to ask especially information points, even if you don't speak French.

i dont know about airports in europe but theyer supposed to be pretty secure, especially at such a large one, so dont worry about that. when you get in paris, just look for the gate that your connecting flight is leaving out of and head there. i also suggest following cnp's advice

the netherlands is a pretty good place for go in europe, so you shouldnt have any problems finding a club

I had a fairly unpleasant experience changing planes in Paris on the way to the USA, due to a bottleneck at the passport control point and what appeared to me to be a poorly organized transfer process run largely by unfriendly personnel. The Charles de Gaulle airport is large, and although one might have to do a lot of walking, it's not hard to figure out where you're supposed to go. Nonetheless, CnP's suggesion of printing out a map of the airport is a good one. Other than that, I'd say go directly to the gate, and think the whole time about what a great time you are going to have in the Netherlands, which I'm sure you will.

I couple of things about CDG:
- it is the most boring (large) airport in the world
- there is absolutely nothing after security check (at least in terminal 2, I don't have a lot of experience of other terminals), so you want to go through as late as possible. Beware though, looong queues may suddenly appear.
- if you have to change terminals, have enough time
- as everywhere in France, speak French
- signs are generally adequate, but you may follow "terminal X" signs for a long time only to find that they suddenly disappear altogether
It is my least favorite airport in the world, but still you should have no trouble changing planes there, especially if your schedule is not too tight.

e: make sure that your luggage is checked to Amsterdam, so that you don't have to collect and recheck them in CDG.

As everywhere else, if in doubts, smile and ask to anyone (even in English) :-) If you have some time between your two flights, there is no problem.

Amsterdam is the Capital of the Netherlands. (and maybe the Go capital of europe)

You're lucky, the Dutch go scene is very active. There is a club in Amsterdam, and also in many cities nearby. We also have quite a lot of tournaments! They are all easily reachable by train, and if you bring a sleeping bag, it's normally no problem to stay in a club member's house for the night either. The tournament calendar is at http://www.gobond.nl/Nieuws/Kalender.php (in Dutch). If you're still here during Christmas and have a few free days, I highly recommend Wintergo; it's a one-week go camp, and the people and atmosphere are always fantastic.

, but I think they translated this because you wrote that you are going to work here as a nanny. You could take the kids you have to watch. Because you are a Go enthusiast yourself, they might be interested in learning how to play as well.
