I've found that after a drink it becomes impossible to read anything, but other areas of the game it seemed I played the same or better. I don't usually drink more than that, but I imagine if I did I'd not play anything resembling go.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm a vegetarian and have no qualms with my fellow meat eaters. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool liberal but respect my conservative friends and sometimes agree with them. I enjoy baseball much more than football, but don't think disparagingly about pigskin fans. I prefer Stella Artois over Guinness and.... Ok, that's different. Nevertheless, whatever floats your boat. :D

Since I started this thread, I need to perhaps explain a bit:

The purpose of this thread is in no way to advocate or glorify drinking (which, as a term, will mean different things to different people). The fact (I believe), however, is that most people do consume alcohol, and many of them to the extent of sometimes being drunk (again, that meaning different things to different people). In Finland, most Go players are young (students) who tend to get drunk every now and them (not all of them of course, but many/most). I myself am older, and no longer student, and my drinking habits are probably different: I drink often, but not much at a time - mostly a couple of beers/drinks/cider or a few glasses of wine at dinner. I believe that it is not traditionally Finnish, but resembles more of Mid/Southern-European culture. Anyhow, regardless of what can be considered normal/healthy/advisable, I believe that many others are like me - sometimes they drink - and occasionally get drunk. What I wanted to know was whether people play Go when drunk (I sometimes do) and if they do, how is their ability compared to sober (mine is about the same). I had no intention of advocating drinking or suggesting that people should drink. I have the utmost respect to people who don't.

I often go to a bar with friends after the go club meeting. I usually drink two beers (these are pints of microbrew, so that's probably about the same as 3 or so cans of budweiser). I'm not sure how much that affects my game, but I enjoy drinking beer, and I enjoy drinking go, so I don't worry about whether I'm playing as well as I can.

For those who dislike drinking and/or look down on it, well, people are different. There are lots of good reasons not to drink, so I'll never criticize a person for abstaining, and I'd hope nondrinkers would have show the respect of not criticizing people who drink in moderation.

This is beginning to sound like an insinuation that anyone who drinks alcohol, at any level of volume or moderation, is automatically a drunk?

I can completely empathise with a strong dislike of irresponsible drinking, and I can completely respect people who choose not to touch any mind altering substances (alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco included). I can also respect those who chose otherwise, without the need for insults.

However, this thread looks like it is beginning to head slowly towards ad hominem. Respect and respect alike if possible, pretty please :)

It might be worth your while to distinguish between those who drink and those who are "drunks," as the former includes a pretty substantial proportion of humanity, and the latter a fairly small portion. I'd be surprised if any/many here have a serious alcohol problem--when would they be sober enough for go?

Even though that's fairly analagous to saying that someone who skips a meal once, for any reason, has an eating disorder?

I think that position insults those who drink responsibly and belittles the harm done by those who don't.

is there really such a thing as drinking responsibly? just the act itself begs irresponsibility.

Speaking as a non-drinker, I don't believe you are qualified to answer the question. If someone drinks, and doesn't then act irresponsibly, what justification is there behind a judgement of irresponsible drinking?

it doesnt matter if they act irresponsibly after the fact because theyve already been irresponsible just by the fact they consumed the alcohol.

Only if you judge that as irresponsible in itself. At the moment, it doesn't seem to have any justification. Drinking small quantities of red wine is widely considered to be healthy, so one could even argue it as part of a healthy diet - what is the justification for this act being in itself irresponsible?

Why is it irresponsible to take a sip of alcohol?

i dont think that healthy and irresponsible are exclusive form each other. besides, i dont know many people who drink alcohol for the purpose of keeping a healthy diet.

because of the implications of what can come with it.

That's not your real objection. We're already talking about people who drink in moderation, which by definition means they aren't drinking enough to start doing stupid things afterwards: there are no implications for them. What's your real reason?
