Anyone interested in Google+ invite? If you don't know what it is, you probably don't want one as not that many people are on it right now. But basically it is Google's response to Facebook with one huge advantage (imo)...when you post your latest go game you can do so to your Go, Family, Friends, etc circle and not bore your Work and other circles. LOL Anyway, the door for invites keeps opening and shutting....currently it is open so if anyone wants an invite, get me your gmail email and I'll see what I can do. Bob |

The only thing Google+ has been good for so far is an increase of people spamming invites (is this good?). What benefits do you see in this communication/networking system? |

Spamming invites? You mean like posting on a forum asking if somebody wants an invite to try something out? Thought that was a nice thing to do. If you are not interested, just move along. If you mean by you got an invite, and then Google sent you multiple invites to your email. Yeah, they had an issue over the weekend. They didn't anticipate the volume they received and for a short time sent out multiple invites to people who should have just received one invite. Google apologized and said it will work on not having it happen again. Fairly minor, and refreshing they took ownership of the problem. As for what g+ is good for I can only answer for myself. I never got into facebook because I didn't like broadcasting to everyone. My family may be interested in vacation, holiday, etc. photos, can't say I really want to share those with coworkers. My friends may be interested in a new discovery in our hobby, but pretty sure most my family wouldn't be. I doubt coordinating where the family Sunday dinner is going to be (by posts, comments suggestions) is going to be too interesting to anyone outside the family. And with three of us in different parts of the country being able to videoconference ("hangout" feature of g+) on a whim...it was serendipitous how much enjoyment we got out of that. In a nutshell, g+ for us has already, after a short week, improved our communication and sharing. And the "our" so far has been family, subset of friends (some haven't joined yet), a local organizatoin, and a club. Oddly enough, I have also bumped into some people online with similar interests and it has been fun communicating with them too. In other words, the value of g+ is social communication. Some people may not see the value, and there is nothing wrong not using social media services. Some people don't see value in email, sms texts, or dare I say it, online forums either. Again, nothing wrong with that either, but I find all the above useful now that there is a social site like g+ that lets me control who I share content with. |

Fond as I am of google+, it is worth noting that facebook does have a "lists" feature, which works adequately well to restrict your posts to specific groups. Note also that if, say, you publish to "family", and they comment on that post, visibility of those comments will be restricted to the same group. Setting up lists is not as intuitive as Circles, but its functional. |

quantumf wrote: .... Setting up lists is not as intuitive as Circles, but its functional. yeah, I think it is this part (not as intuitive) that Circles seems so much better. Facebook's seemingly frequent changes to how they handle privacy and security is a bear. And I think it is almost sinister of them to be blocking attempts of people exporting data from FB to g+ Not that I think Google has our best interests at heart. I would guess one of their motivations for taking on FB is to get access to all that wonderful traffic and eventual ad revenue that they lose from FB's walled content garden. When something is free, we are the ones being sold. But g+ is proving very useful. BTW, jordus, I sent ya an invite. |

Yeah, they had an issue over the weekend... Yeah, that's more of what I meant. So sorry if I came out bitter and angst like. Invites didn't just come to my e-mail, it was on other forums and networks too. Everyone was messaging in order to hand out free invites. Had a little time to look g+ over, but haven't gotten too involved yet. Seems like it could have some benefits. It's a system for better organizing people. My only concern is having all my google accounts linked. I know I don't have to set up g+ on all my accounts, but it's a little frustrating if people keep sending me invites. It also feels like we're sharing a lot of personal info. I mean, that's why I liked having personal email separate from facebook. Anyways, so sorry if I p'ed anyone off. I'm not too vocal on this forum but I really enjoy this community. I'm also really bad at Go, so if you want to vent by destroying me, feel free (^_^)v Info's over there <----- |
