So, the wait is nearly over and the headstart for SW:TOR begins in about a week. I actually missed the beta, since in spite of having gotten invited to some of the weekend events, I didn't have time. I pre-ordered the game and I'm actually excited about it even though I do have some concerns. It'll eat up time like crazy for a few weeks and months, and MMOs and I traditionally clash. (And I stuck seven years with WoW, and I really don't want to make this commitment again -- I'd be closing in on 50 by the time I put the lightsabre aside!)

Are any of you guys going to pick up the game? The lady and I will be playing on an English EU server, although we haven't chosen a faction yet. A friend of mine recommends the Imperials as they allegedly have better quest lines and also won most of the battlegrounds in the beta (then again, in betas people usually play the side they won't play in the release version), so that's what I favour at the moment.

I'm hoping to pick it up, but things are tight right now. Maybe I'll get on if someone buys it for me for Christmas, but likely I'll be late to the party. I'm always slow on such games as well, as my play time is often once or twice a week, at most, due to long work days, and lots of other things to play/do on my time off.

Still, I hope to grab a lightsaber and join the fight soon enough.

Unlike other MMOs, it's heavily story-driven, with all text being voiced, so I think this is actually a game you can jump in later and not feel like you can't ever catch up with everyone else. My main concern is mostly that it will push aside a lot of other interests for a while, but well, may it won't be so bad. ;)

I settled for playing a Sith Inquisitor with an Assassin tank-spec, since the lady would like to play a healer. I also think it has potential in PvP. Maybe I'll even be able to limit myself to one or two characters :). That didn't work out in WoW, but I'll certainly try (there are fortunately not many classes that really appeal to me).

Heh. Another thing that holds me back on mmos is the way I play RPGs. I'm a bit CDO (In alphabetical order. As they should be.) and I have this sneaking suspicion that there may be another class, another way of playing, another group of quests, so much cooler than what I chose, just around the corner there. So, I tend to play the first few days/weeks of a character, then start a new character. Over. And Over.

This is not so horrid in something like Dark Souls, where I can test builds, like my Strength based Greatsword Swingin Pyromancer, and my Spear Wielding Sorcerer.

In MMOs though, I tend to not get very far at all.

I've only ever broken level 40 in WoW once. I no longer play that character.
I never saw top level in CityOfAnything in spite of playing off and on for 10 years.
I bought a lifetime subscription to Champions. I have yet to hit level 20 on over 10 characters.

You might notice, gnat like attention span, it kills me. :)

Still, I've asked for the game for christmas. We'll see what happens.

Took me a solid few seconds to figure that out. Then I lol'd. Good job, sir.

I'll be playing this, I thought the beta rocked. I was always skeptical of MMOs but this will be my first, I trust Bioware. I'll be open to a casual group with anyone here on one of the PvE servers.

But do you also trust EA? ;)

The first people got in today, but pretty much only those who registered their pre-order in July. I didn't do that before end of August, so I guess it'll be tomorrow or the day after. After seeing the population distribution, though, I decided to start on the Republic side since the Empire seems totally overrun with people. That actually surprised me, but purple lighting is admittedly much cooler than the floating pebbles.

I also changed my mind on my first character. It'll be a tank-specced Trooper (Vanguard). I still want to play a Jedi Shadow too, and a Scoundrel, but not all at once!

Hey folks, as you may likely have seen in the last 24 hours, we've been redoubling our efforts in optimally managing the time it takes to get into Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The BioWare Live Team has been carefully watching the influx of players into the game and is addressing with surgical precision the longer wait times on the small number of servers that were having longer wait times previously. We've also being doing our best to get every little bit of possible performance on our servers to increase capacity: we’ve “turned them up to 11” to do our very best to get you in and playing as quickly as possible. As a result - you should now be seeing significant improvement versus waiting times at the end of last week.

We're also addressing the concerns about losing your place in line if you happen to disconnect for some reason before getting into the game. We've been working very hard on this and are performing final testing on potential solutions.

Thanks for your patience and we really appreciate your enthusiasm for Star Wars: The Old Republic. We’re absolutely dedicated to ensuring you have a great experience both inside and outside the game.

Since its grafics are kind of outdated, I'd say, if you can run WoW then you can also play SWTOR.

No, actually, the game's engine is currently very poorly optimized. It'll run acceptably if you can run WoW on "ultra", but not if you can only run WoW so-so. I would definitely advise against getting SWTOR if someone's specs are close to the minimum requirements. In fact, I would advise against getting it with any integrated video chipset and dual core. The game benefits incredibly from quad core, unlike most games (and pretty much all MMOs).

Well, I play the game on a quad core AMD processor, and the whole thing loads and moves quickly. My graphics card is also quite nice.

On the other hand, my boyfriend unfortunately must play on an older dual core, though, admittedly, with a dedicated graphics card. The graphics are not the issue for his computer, but rather the extensive and somewhat astounding load times, particularly when initiating conversations.

So, yes, if you meet the minimum requirements, the game, that is, combat and travelling around, can be played. But be prepared for some frustration in the load and conversational aspects of the game.

By the By, I'm Elden on Rubat Crystal, Jedi Sentinel...

And I picked up a tune on Darth Sion, but, hum. I don't recall his name. Sith Sorcerer.

So far, I've been really grooving on the jedi/sith side of things, not so much on the ranged side. But, I always did prefer melee.

My fascination with the game has a little wanned. I really enjoyed the first two or so weeks, when there was a lot to discover, and before I made the mistake of getting a little bit more into PvP. Terrible balance, terrible interface, terrible combat flow. I also over-played it on the holidays.

But, I still feel that if you approach the game like KOTOR or ME with some average multiplayer features (very barebones set of MP functions compared to the competition), it's an enjoyable ride with a lot to see and experience. But I don't feel the game has any lasting appeal once you've played two characters (one of each faction as the vast majority of the quests are side quests and thus the same for all classes of the given faction). I'd say that SWTOR is a solid, even good RPG, but a mediocre MMO. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. :)

I recently watched some Let's Play-videos on Youtube and I must say, I begin to like the game ^^ I never was much into playing games with monthly fees but as far as I know I can play one month for free when I buy it. Worth consideration!
But on the other hand, there are a lot of really cool games out there at the moment. Above all Skyrim and The Witcher II ^^
