I saw recently that the prospect of the next World Mind Sports Games being held in Brazil had vanished. Baku in Azerbaijan was touted as a candidate replacement. Does anyone know any more gossip on this topic. I wondered if it had anything to do with the break up of the contract between the IMSA (international mind sports association) and MSP (Mind sports partners) - you may well ask what both organisations are.

It will be held at Kangreung, Korea from 7/25 - 7/28.

There will be 5 round of Swiss league and they are expecting about 500 participants.

Is that the same event as the wmsg that in 2008 were in Beijing and 2012 in Lille? There was no youth requirement for those.

Sorry about causing confusion. It is World youth mind sports.
Players must be 23 years old or under. 5 round for baduk and 6 round for chess. And a lot of other activities.

That looks like a different event, yes. Is it run by the IMSA though? I could imagine that it might be, but I didn't see any link to the IMSA when I read through the website.

The Brazilian WMSG was closed off because of concerns whether Brazil could handle the 2016 Summer Olympics. Baku is already on the book for hosting the 2016 Chess Olympiad, so it was natural to consider it as a candidate for expansion to include all mind sports. None of this had anything to do with the contract breach by MSP with IMSA, BTW. (I am sure you do not want the gory details about that!)

Considering the 2008 WMSG-I at Beijing and the 2012 WMSG-II at Lille, we are actually ahead of the game. So I remain optimistic that the whole thing will be pulled off.

Ah, so this time there is a chance that there will be no clash with the Chess Olympiad, smart :)

Thank you for your information. - I guess you know that also such things are interesting for us, but we would understand if you could not share every detail.

The Chess line up looks impressive

and it seems confirmed here that xiangqi is going to be part of the games.

That's a different event - the SportAccord World Mind Games (SAWMG or just WMG). It is an annual invitational tournament, not the quadrennial Olympic-style WMSG. (The names are confusing, I know... But we have to accommodate the sponsors' wishes).

Xiangqi is now included in all official mind-game events after the World Xiangqi Federation (WXF) was admitted to IMSA earlier this year.
