Normally, it would go like this. I think playing a instead of 4, letting me play 4 and playing something like b instead would be very bad for him. He might also think about tenuki'ing after 1, but 2 is huge.
Let's say I want to tenuki, where would I play then? If I play around a he will kosumi attach and probably eat my stone with something like b later. Then the marked exchange might be very bad for me. If I play c instead, he might take sente to play b, but I still have aji at d. If he plays anywhere else to capture solidly it's very slow. c might be a very good option then. Let's look at a continuation if he plays normally.
After 5 here, a might be really efficient for black, since he's really thick now. Still it looks like his moyo didn't result to much. The exchange in the upper left was not bad for me. I think 5 at b is not possible anymore, it looks very killable after the sequence I already showed.
I was a little worried about this trigger feeling like I was suggesting "you should fight this ko", but what can ya do. I think as white I would very probably ko here.

Do you have any strong opinions about using triggers?
My opinion is that triggers are used far too often in our Malkovich games. Even if you don't completely accept the idea that every play should be reconsidered in full, the offering player volunteers to turn off their brain for the duration of the trigger. There are also times when I see people on the receiving side accept triggers that they should not. The triggers generally look like typical sequences, but accepting them loses opportunities that might be discovered if the players went forward play by play. Sometimes things really are obvious and can be considered forced, in which case triggers are reasonable. In general though, what is the point of speeding things up for a move or two in a game that is played over weeks or months?

I don't think he will be able to capture my corner, but even if he does, the loss is too great. I suspect he will play as in the first diagram, it doesn't look too bad for him, but his upper side potential territory vanished.
Top is the interesting place to play at the moment. I'm not 100% sure what variation pancake is intending here, but I feel the thickness facing K16 will be a satisfactory result.
I am vaguely curious what joseki pancake felt I should have played. I am very happy with my double-hane, however I feel I should have given variations on the preceding move more thought.
Presumably something like this. White can not cut because of . If instead 2 at 5, Black just plays 3. If 2 at 3, after Black plays at 2 the marked stone is in just the right place to create a ladder, right?

Which seems a bit more active, and I think the tower-peep-esque shape tends to be good for black. However, in the end I felt the game move was more solid.
Heh. I actually chose my move before checking your trigger, so-
Well, I guessed the obvious triggered move, and I think pancake's sequence may be right and I have played slowly on top. My reason for not playing it;
What can I say? tightest move possible to capture the stone. It does nothing more then capturing, but it's really big anyway.. omitting the a-b exchange might be good, since then I get a good point at c. c now is bad shape, since he has d.
b seems to invite the following sequence, after which black will probably play something like a, after exchanging b-c I think I gained about 16 points on the right. He gets about the same in the center, but he gets b as well, which is huge.
Maybe I should just play easy with 1 and 3 in this diagram. 3 at a would be worse, because he plays b in sente. In this case, c is my sente. In this case, I would have about 45 solid points, he would have about 42. So I would be ahead by few, but he's got more potential still. e and f are huge, if they're miai, that would be advantageous for me.

Now that I actually look at this again, I think his potential is quite low, because I can capture the marked black stone if he tries to make something in the center. Also, e and f might be miai, but I really want f, because I have a great follow up at g. Anyway, if I play anywhere else, he gets to play the slide in sente, my corner could be destabilised a bit and that move is just HUGE. I think this is really the only option. for me. I will play it!
So, I feel like I have lost ground over the last couple moves. This seems necessary because a white move at the same place not only lives on top, but secures top left in a big way. To some extent I had another chance to revisit right, but I feel like that would be saying 35 was a bad move.
