I think one shouldn't judge a master strategist until well into yose. However it turns out, that'll most likely be exactly what he was aiming at.

I think it's important to have a nibble of something sweet before drinking the tea. It knocks the edge off, so you can taste the nice vegetal flavour even if your water was a little too hot and the tea is a little too bitter. Better than if the water was too cool, to my taste.

You're just planting seeds, too. A first exposure that is positive, even if it doesn't hold, might still grow a Go player some day, even if you don't know about it. Of course that doesn't help the Go club today.
