Re: Following Nakamura Sumire

The first game of the Korean women's Kisei final has ended, and Nakamura managed to eke out a solid 0.5-point win. Maybe Kisei is the title for her; she did manage to claim it once in Japan after all. We'll see. She only needs to win one more game!

Re: Ueno Asami wins 7th Go Seigen title

This should be her second international title actually, she won the international SENKO Cup for women in 2022. That was a much smaller tournament though, and 4 of the 8 participants there were Japanese, so it was almost a half-domestic title. This win was definitely more impressive. Japan has had a ...

Re: Amazon army

Three games in a row. I think this already means some prize for her.

I don't know anything about what prizes the tournament gives, but it looks like her win again Xie Yimin ranked her up to 4p. Her rank on fox during the game with Yimin was 3p, but in the game she lost vs Kim (not Eunji ...

Re: Following Iyama Yuta (no world ranking discussions)

Iyama (Callaway) has finally played the second game of the bo3 final in the pro tournament on Fox (called Ren Qi Zheng Ba Sai?) against Tong Mengcheng (TMC/顺利过关). The first game of the final was played all the way back in January, about three months ago. I'm not sure why it has taken so long to get ...

Re: Shibano Toramaru

Shibano won his last game in the Honinbo League against Yokotsuka Riki (7d) the other day, finishing with 6 wins and 1 loss. Since Kyo Kagen also finished 6-1, the two will face off in a playoff game to decide who will challenge Iyama for the Honinbo title. This game will be played on Monday (6th of ...

Re: New pros, and a naughty one

Meanwhile, off the ranch, Yoda Norimoto appears a lot of people upset to have with postings on Twitter and Google Groups. I don't subscribe to any social media and can't find anywhere else what he is specifically alleged to have done, though it seems to include putting the Masters Cup in jeopardy ...

Re: Following Iyama Yuta (no world ranking discussions)

Iyama isn't really known for being someone who plays a lot, or especially well, on the internet (his fox account has 54 wins and 89 losses for example). He has however been participating in a pro tournament on fox called 第一期野狐人气争霸赛, where he has been beating up Chinese pros left and right (including ...

Re: Following Iyama Yuta (no world ranking discussions)

The fourth game of the Tengen final between Iyama and Kyo Kagen was played a few days ago. Iyama won rather convincingly, tying up the score to 2-2. The last game will be played in Tokushima on the 18th.

Re: Following Nakamura Sumire

I have no idea why it would think 高 is "Ji". Maybe it's a special reading I haven't heard about.

I don't know what the automaton was (wrongly) thinking, of course, but the character it was facing wasn't 高 - it was 髙

It's common for Japanese people to use old variants of characters in their names ...

Re: Following Nakamura Sumire

On that web site, the translation for his name was "Ji Jin Changzhao"? What's up with these guys??

Whatever machine translation software is used on that site is thinking it's a Chinese name. His name would be read Gaojin Changzhao in Chinese. I have no idea why it would think 高 is "Ji". Maybe it ...

Re: Following Nakamura Sumire

That the Japanese language does not have "First" dan and instead has "small" dan, speaks volumes.

Well, the sho in shodan (初段) actually does mean "first".

On another note, Nakamura is now 2-1 in her official matches. That's pretty good for someone who supposedly has no business being a pro. Did ...

Re: 2018/2019 Meijin League 44th edition interesting situati

These matches were finally played today (or yesterday, depending on where you are) and Iyama lost, meaning his chance of getting the Meijin back from Cho U is gone. Shibano and Kono won their games, meaning they both ended on 6 wins and 2 loses in the league. If I understand things correctly, they ...
