Re: Knotwilg's practice
50 seems odd / inconsistent with the atari you played. If you played the other atari then at least you are threatening p13 (ladder doesn't work, but with p15 peep maybe something does, though black can always give up 1 stone if it does) or o12. Whereas the atari you played aims at m17 sheanigans ...

Re: BChamps snuff?
At the risk of putting words in Matthew's mouth, though I do know him fairly well, I wouldn't say the lack of competition is why he gave up playing in the championship. It's because he recognised he wasn't as strong as he used to be and didn't have the focus and drive to regain his strength, and ...

Re: More on coping with sabaki
That doesn't seem a particularly unusual example of sabaki to me (lots of attachments and sente exchanges), but also I wouldn't find it weird to describe black as "making light flexible shape" in this example, but John evidently thinks it's not. Is the idea "light" is understood to mean big gaps ...

Re: Question on proposed invasion in book problem
Would this invasion be possible if White jumped out in response to 1 or only if white does not answer blacks 1? Would anyone be able to show how this would work or some variations? I have tried playing a couple of variations but it seems that White would be able to kill Blacks invasion.
The ...

Re: Visiting the UK: where to play?
I'm in Cambridge, it would be nice to meet xela after all these years! But being a new Dad it would be hard to find the time, so don't come here just on my account. It is a nice city to visit though, and the town club meets in the Devonshire Arms pub (which is very close to the train station) on ...

Re: Question on proposed invasion in book problem
The fact that black's invasion is not suicidal is a clue why we start in the corners: the corners are a much easier place to make secure territory and eyes than on the sides (which themselves are easier than the centre).

Re: Is this an empty triangle?
Something you realize when you look at a number of games with KataGo is that it is often uninterested in making bad-shape connections, and this case is no different. It does not even consider the game move and wants to play something along the lines of

Re: Is this an empty triangle?
I presume it was played in response to the L7 peep. I would say that, if you do want to respond directly, then there are 3 choices, this L6, direct capture at k6, or A=k7. Each has pros and cons. Pro of l6 is it ensures k5 is a true eye and takes a liberty of L7, con is A is sente (how useful is ...

Re: Is this an empty triangle?
Although strong players like Andrew do this automatically and so usually don't think to mention it, we should remember to factor in tewari. An ET may not be objectively good in its own right, but can be excusable if the opponent has made an offsetting inefficient move, e.g. connection on a dame ...

Hello from Unterdudette
Hello. My name's Rosalyn. I don't play go yet, but my Daddy Uberdude does. Forum regulars might have noticed he hasn't been active here much lately. That's because when I was in Mummy's belly I messed up her hormones and she needed lots of looking after, coming into this world wasn't easy, and now I ...

Here's a chart from ps.waltheri showing the rapid rise in popularity of this shape post AI. Not unheard of before though.

Re: Good shape?
The pre-AI standard theory I learnt was that this shape was generally to be avoided as, whilst the 3-3 invasion is in principle killable, in practice it's messy with all sorts of bad aji and problems outside. So for that reason the enclosure with 1 knight's move and 1 diagonal (move f17 to e17) was ...
