In 1986, the second place was taken by Yoo Chanhyuk, who is professional 9d now and was a Korean top player for quite a while.
Actually the quality of the players from the top countries is a lot more constant than from most other countries. Minor go nations only have few strong go players, and ...

Re: Go expenditures and significant others
My wife is also limiting mainly the time I spend on go. I havent been on a tournament ever since our son was born. No problems concerning monetary expenses, probably because Im the stingy one in our marriage.

Re: How Many Professional Go Players?
Im a fan of professional sumo in Japan, so Ill comment on this.
The system of professional sumo cannot be compared to the system of professional go. Only the participants of the upper two leagues (called sekitori, about 70 wrestlers) get a regular income and can actually make a living from sumo ...

Re: Book recommendations? (sci-fi or fantasy)
I liked Silverberg a lot in the 90s. One of those I remember especially fondly would translate as "Gypsies Star". I also liked Orson Scott Card. Reading this thread revives a lot of memories, I was a public library junkie back in my school and Zivildienst (civil service?) time.

Im still doubting the thread based on experience with my own son, but children are all different and I only have one, so I cant really know. (I should better concentrate on his soccer skills...)

Re: Book recommendations? (sci-fi or fantasy)
One recent fantasy trilogy I really liked was "Stone Dance of the Chameleon" by Ricardo Pinto. No magic, creates a fascinating, epic world without relying much on fantasy stereotypes (no true heir, no "good" and "evil"). The only thing about the series that might turn off some readers is that the ...

Re: The seed's of go
My son is 2 and a half years old, he can place stones decently (I could make photos of that, too, and any camera manufactured in the last five years can make digital video clips) but he doesnt fully understand the game yet, plus he doesnt have the patience to place stones until a game is finished ...

Re: Star-point joseki question
White has sente and a ponnuki on the right side. Since white connected at the side in the initial joseki, one can assume that white didnt expect any trouble in a center fight (meaning blacks resulting center influence is probably not worth much), so the lower side group should be pretty safe. Any ...

Re: Improving Life & Death?
Most good problem books cover shapes that might turn up in games.
"Knowing" certain shapes (I think DrStraw talks of "hardwiring" in this context) saves a lot of time in games with a clock (tourney or internet) and there are certain shapes that turn up over and over again. Up to 1d level, one ...

I rarely count in casual internet games, I do more often in serious games with longer time limits (german league, I used to in turn based games)

Re: Which server(s) do you play on?
Ive been playing mainly on KGS ever since I found out there were alternatives to Yahoo go. Ive tried turn based servers like DGS and Littlegolem, but I quit since I think too much about unfinished games which is bad for my daily life and my sleep.

Re: Modern games, ancient games, or what's in-between?
I usually only look at games from go news pages or for reviewing openings and joseki that I encounter in my own games, so Id prefer to study modern or at least post-shinfuseki games. But its also a question of available Material. It would be a crime not to read commented Go Seigen or Shusaku games ...

Re: Cut a short line
Maybe You could say its less severe... basically, the vector cut leaves the opponent with 2 groups to defend, but he has only one move. If the cut stones are farther away from another, its less likely that a severe attack can be launched on the neglected stone.

Re: Game review 2k-4k no handi
What I notice that a lot of "forcing" moves are answered even though they arent really threatening crucial stones. For example, move 48 could be answered on the other side, and move 77 just threatens to cut a worthless tail, instead of answering it just surround the black group in the upper left.
