I'm playing "a guy" who 4 months ago was a DGS 1k and has managed to make it to 4d ! This "guy" is not new to DGS, I've played "him" several times over the last couple of years and "he" was always around 1k.

I seem to recall that one of Ishi Press's older books had a nice discussion of invading and defending 3-space extensions. Both for 3rd-line-3rd-line situations and also for 3rd-line-4th-line extensions.

I think this is a fun AND potentially useful discussion.

I mostly play on IGS and I do lots of experimenting, but if I had to pick my "true" IGS rank I suspect it would be 2d+. (I've achieved an official 3d rank several times.)

I don't play on KGS often, but at the 2d-3d level, IGS and KGS seem to me to be within a stone of each other - perhaps a KGS ranking is a tiny bit stronger?

I often start new accounts on IGS - typically when I try a new joseki or fuseki.

Sometimes, if I get off to a good start (4-1 or 7-3) IGS will automatically "promote" me. So I might go from 3d? to 4d?
