Re: Question about "Commented games of Lee Seedol"

I read all three books in Chinese and preferred the first, although they were all excellent.

Re: Go influences chess

Getting back to the actual event where this format was applied, the reason for the failure seems to be quite different than the generic issue of draws or the advantage of playing white.

Classical time control chess is an entirely different beast than rapid or blitz. For each classical game the ...

Re: Go influences chess

And by all accounts it has been a terrible failure as a chess format. The nature of the game, with the preponderance of draws and the advantage of the white pieces, does not make this format suitable or exciting in the same way as when it is applied to go.

Re: Chess forums

Chessforums.org seems pretty good, but I found what I was looking for with chesspub.com. It's a bit more on the advanced analysis/book review side of things.

Chess forums

In comparison to L19x19, the English language chess community is huge and has comparatively many online forums. Is there an analogue forum to this one, i.e. a go to spot for information on studying chess and following the super GM circuit?

Re: Chinese Professional Ratings for December 2014

Well, I certainly am familiar with the top 20 and have heard of most of these names semi-regularly over the years. I read Weiqi Tiandi every two weeks, which covers the Chinese pro scene in detail. By contrast, I probably only know five currently active top pros in each of Korea and Japan.

I am kgs 2-3d and weak-average 6d on wbaduk

I can only say anecdotally. At my level, I am 4D on both servers, but I feel wbaduk is softer.

world rankings

Here is another interesting post from the Baidu weiqi BBS. I am not sure of the source of these rankings, but they seem to have been developed with some rigor.

I won't translate all of the names, but will review the top ten and a few other of note. While 3/5 are Korean, 7/10 and 14/20 are Chinese ...

Chinese rank comparisons

It seems a universal interest of go players to want to know how their ranks compare between online servers and face to face.

The linked post (Chinese) from the Baidu weiqi BBS has an interesting analysis comparing Tygem ranks with Chinese adults ranks.

Tygem 1 dan = Chinese 1 dan (a weak rank, a ...

Re: "We want to be real pros"

I have just read this article (thanks for posting!) Where in the article are you finding any European player making such comments as "we want to be real pros"? I did not find this sentiment expressed anywhere.

Pavol and Ali both made comments to the effect they they want to be able to push ...

He didn't want to try out new things with someone as strong as Gu Li

I think it had more to do with playing in the quarter-finals of a world championship than it did with playing against Gu Li.

I agree with Krama that the decision was more about facing a strong opponent. There might be an ...

Re: Beijing photos Dec, 2014

So I have spoken with Karl who was an interpreter for the event. Apparently this was from the China-Europe-North America Go Symposium held recently at Tsinghua University. Most of the discussion was around the CEGO training program for top European players, aspirations to send more Chinese pros ...

Well, the tall Western guy in the upper right corner is Karl Irwin, a good friend of mine who is fluent in Chinese. I'll ask him for details and report back what I learn.
