Re: Absolute Zero
Intriguing... It's very jargony, more so than the various AlphaGo papers. I can't tell if this software is actually doing something brilliant, or if it's merely an improvement on previous models that were terrible.

Re: Visualizing go openings
Thanks Philip for sharing this. Indeed it's beautiful and fascinating. It's part of a larger research paper, "Opening strategies in the Game of Go from feudalism to superhuman AI" by Bret Beheim: there's a preprint at https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/cewst_v5, and code at https://github.com ...

I think it is like this.
Oh, that's nice!
To split hairs, KataGo thinks this way is about half a point better. This is all a bit above my level; I'm just posting it because the first move is so striking.

Sorry I can't get there at two days' notice! And I was sorry to miss you last year in the US. Let me know when you're coming to Australia? :-)

Re: AI theory poser
Chess players have had access to large databases since the 1980s. Even without AI, it's clear from the stats that some openings are more effective than others. Basically, if you play a king's pawn opening, or if you respond to your opponent's king's pawn with anything other than the Sicilian defence ...

And the first six problems for your entertainment. (No, I won't upload the whole book: I think it's still under copyright. This small extract is fair dealing for the purposes of review and study.)

Hashimoto's Tsumego Saijiki 詰碁歳時記
I discovered this at last year's US Go Congress. (Yes, I could have posted earlier! I got home, unpacked, and got distracted...) One morning I took a bus trip out of town to Portland's "other" bookshop, not the big famous one in the city centre, but a quirky second-hand place called Chaparral Books ...

Re: Trying to accept influence
I tried playing and drawing my kifu once and it was a disaster.
Try entering the moves into an SGF editor from memory at the end of the day. On a first go, you might only get the first 20 or 30 moves. But with practice, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to remember 100 moves, even several ...

Re: Trying to accept influence
It's much easier to give advice if we can see an actual position.
Sorry for the delay, but I had to find time to check for the pics. Take care.
Oh dear, you took me very literally! It's not just the position I want to look at. It's the flow of the game: how you respond to the opponent's moves ...

You're asking some big questions here! Can you post some game records? It's much easier to give advice if we can see an actual position.
The sidebar gives your rank as "OGS ddk". Is that still the case? I'm asking because in the OGS forums, I've seen a few ddk games where both players build a wall ...

Re: LG Cup 29 final fiasco
What I read online is that earlier this year, there were a few cases where a Chinese player didn’t place some of their captured stones on the lid. Because of this, a Korean opponent mistakenly thought they were leading by X points. So, they played safer than they should have, and as a result, they ...

Re: LG cup final game 2 forfeit by Ke Jie
I have heard of lost stones (those are often found again just in time for counting) and I have seen people do what Ke Jie did, but if this was what usually happened (even if only in the LG cup) then I think there would be a long history of penalties and forfeited games. Has something similar ...
