Re: Anybody know where to buy a set of Ing go stones?

That pretty much leaves us at $60 for a set of stones.

Yellow Mountain has those $15 plastic sets but they are hard to play with, so incredibly lightweight and slippery that pieces scatter on the board if you drop one (slippery!) or bump one.

There's the cheap "shinkwang" glass sets that are too ...

Won a game I wasn't feeling good about (8k)

I rarely ever play sanrensei and don't like playing against it. Maybe that had me feeling off balance but I felt like I was falling behind. Then black made a couple big mistakes and I won by resignation. Pretty big greedy mistake at 159 and lost a big group, then I felt kind of lucky with the kill ...

Re: Eye Catching Posters/Fliers

I liked the Walla Walla flyer so I made something similar. My theory is the ridiculousness of it will be eye catching on a bulletin board. I hung it at the local board game store. We'll see if it gets any response!

Re: Finding the balance between play and study

Despite my original post I've played a lot compared to my reading. That and watching much higher ranked games, usually without commentary. Got up to 13/12k on OGS and 10k on KGS (should break that SDK barrier with another win!) I feel like I've been doing better with basic shape and a lot better ...

Re: Richmond, VA go club

Thanks for coming out! That last game you witnessed was rough, it was actually a game our first time around.

5 people, not a bad turnout. I think we can get a dozen soon!

Re: Richmond, VA go club

Thanks, I heard he's in town but have never met him. I know his business is out of his house, not a stop by type of thing, As soon as we get the new venue confirmed I'll send him an email to see if he knows anyone who may be interested. I'm going to put up flyers at the university and the board game ...

Re: Finding the balance between play and study

I liked this game. I thought it was going well. I took a few groups, felt I was doing well, then lost a large group at the end and lost by a point and a half. Looking back I had a few lucky breaks, white defended some groups that had little chance of living that gave me some free moves (the groups ...

Re: Finding the balance between play and study

Thanks for the tips! I got Shape Up and have been reading it on the bus etc. I guess I've been skipping the review your games part. On another plus I got some people together to play locally including a 4k player who is happy to teach. Having someone in person to give advice is pretty nice.

3 excited members so far. We decided to meet every other week and are changing venues away from the chess club. As always, anyone in or near Richmond just let me know.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Maybe check out a commented go games for getting the feel of the big board? I like the Sibicky videos on YouTube. He walks through the plays and why they make sense or not, I like that it's not all pro games. There's all levels of games commented. Seeing people play at my level (making big mistakes ...

Finding the balance between play and study

I've been playing go off and on for years and never really got any better. I played a fair amount at times and still hovered around 17-16k. I watched some Sibicky youtube videos and read Opening Theory Made Easy and I progressed to about 14-13k in a week.

This lit a fire under me when I realized I ...

Re: alternative to a 4-4 opening

Thanks! Great information. It's good to know it isn't as cut and dry as it was implied. I ended up playing it in a game as white to see how it went. Cut off the whole corner, although black could have defended better at several points.

alternative to a 4-4 opening

While studying some variations on 4-4 joseki I came upon one that I'm not following at the end. According the joseki dictionary I was looking the black 7 stone is necessary to live. I've played it a few times and am having troubles killing it as white if black tenukis instead of that last move. I'm ...
