Working on Go concepts

Hi all,

So, I feel like I am making OK progress in my go. One thing I am finding tricky though is to recall all the go concepts I have picked up from books or videos. I have a working knowledge of quite a few concepts, but often don't apply them during my games. For example, I might find that I ...

Re: Optimum game time for beginners/intermediates

I play chess to tournament level, so yes I am able to focus for 5+ hours. However, this is my problem: In chess, it is often recommended beginners play longer games, but it seems (anecdotally, at least) that for Go, longer games are the preserve of stronger players, and beginners are recommended to ...

Optimum game time for beginners/intermediates

Hi all,

Having learned the rules last February, but then having not played much since, I began January this year determined to play more and increase my strength. I'm currently floating around 16K. My question is quite simple (but the answer might not be!): What is the optimum game time for ...

Re: Road to my 100 first go loss: I ask for some commentary

EdLee: Can I just ask? You state that C5 and E6 are vital points here. How does one determine this? I've heard of vital points in the context of life & death situations - are you using the term here in this context, too?

Re: First post! (17k vs. 16k)

Hi EdLee,

Oops, I meant :b26:, not :b18:! Sorry about that!

The relation to chess I guess will become clearer as I improve at Go. What I meant basically is that at the level I play at, the loss of a pawn can be the game lost. Such a small amount of material at the upper levels can really be a ...

Re: First post! (17k vs. 16k)

Thank you so much for the helpful feedback! It seems I have much to learn (but it's very fun doing so!)!

EdLee: Thanks for the analysis! I saw the C10 group needed helping, but I played :b18: almost as a sacrifice. I play chess to almost expert level, and one thing I am finding difficult in go is ...

First post! (17k vs. 16k)

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here! I've been playing for a couple of months or so (have played my first 100 games), but the game below was one game I played today where I lost by komi. There were a few basic mistakes from me (like my "throw-in" in the lower-right), but if anyone has any ...
