Re: AlphaGo Teach discussion (Go Tool from DeepMind)

Did Ke Jie win that match despite the opening? I hope Alpha Go doesn't deter people from playing different openings. I believe Go is a more flexible game where people don't have to rely on what Alpha Go says is the best result in the opening. Just because one results gives a .5% increase (choosing ...

Re: “AlphaGo—A Documentary” (90 min) by Greg Kohs

I decided to rent the documentary and watch it over the weekend.

It makes you feel bad for Lee Sedol and want to root against Deepmind. There was only one member of the team that empathized with Lee Sedol (a woman, unsurprisingly) and actually felt bad for him after losing repeatedly while ...

Re: Video series: Learning from AlphaGo

I'll check out your video, thanks. I think the Alphago Teach tool is interesting, but wish they had some comments as to why Alpha Go prefers the moves that it does. I guess they probably don't understand any better than we do. As it is, it can give you some ideas on possibly how to play a better ...

I had no idea about Go Eye. That sounds awesome! $20 is a bit steep for this app for me at the moment, but I can see myself using this a lot.

Re: mobile phone collection

Wouldn't it be painfully obvious if you were trying to use your phone to cheat right across from your opponent? Even if you were only using your phone to record your game, it would still be obvious if you were looking at it for any extended period beyond recording moves.

The most remarkable thing ...

Re: What would you all consider "must have" Iphone Go apps

The ones I use most regularly are Crazystone, SmartGo Kifu and Tsumego Pro. Pandanet is nice, but I rarely have time to sit on my phone for at least an hour playing a game against someone. I like it for viewing live games. I would recommend Dragon Stone (DGS) if you want to play turn based style ...

Re: Nationality of 謝依旻 | Xie Yimin ?

I see. I was "watching" from the Pandanet app on my phone last night. I wasn't sure if there was a video stream, because "live broadcast" sounds like a video stream to me. Still fun to watch either way.

Re: Nationality of 謝依旻 | Xie Yimin ?

Is anyone watching the live broadcast? The website doesn't show any kind of stream when I check it. It's currently 2pm in Japan on August 12th.

Re: Pronunciation of Japanese terms

I speak beginner level Japanese and this thread is just confusing to me. I recommend the OP to download any beginner level Japanese app, like Duolingo which has Japanese now or find some website or Youtube video that shows pronunciation of the hiragana. It's much simpler hearing it than reading text ...

Re: Reason To Quit Playing Go

I more or less quit go when I found I could not make any substantial progress anymore unless I really devoted myself to the game, which I found too much of an investment.

Another reason to quit Go for me was to start table tennis, which induces the question what I found in table tennis which I ...

Re: shoutout to the creators of the surrounding game

How can I watch this if I didn't back the Kickstarter? There was a screening at an independent theater near me, but I couldn't attend since I had work in the evening. I see on the website there's an option to buy the movie, but it's not available yet. Will at be after screenings at select theaters ...

Re: Lose 100 games

This piece of advice is being passed around often on reddit in the baduk subreddit. There are a lot of interested beginners showing up after the craze of Alphago. A lot of people are telling them "If you haven't lost 50-100 games yet, then keep playing". I don't find this advice to be very helpful ...
