Re: 2024 US Go Congress

I'll be there as well! I haven't been able to do the full Congress week since 2018 :)

Re: Random thoughts on improvement

Getting a teacher is great - I've been in the American Yunguseng Dojang (AYD) for 4 years. For the first 1 1/2 years it helped a lot and then I stalled for a couple of years. There are many reasons for that, but they all boil down to being a busy adult. Recently things turned around for me because ...

Re: Slow Games server???

IGS gameplay is pretty relaxed. It's Canadian time and the most popular settings is 10 minutes / 25 moves - so most games last 40-60 minutes.

Re: Blue Label Stones

1. The nice sound and feel of shell and slate hitting the board when the stones are placed.
2. The stones being of high consistency in their size and shape.

I own a set of size 40 Blue Label Slate/Shell stones from KGT. They far, far surpassed my expectations. They are the most consistent with ...

Re: The practice of Tsumego - 2 questions

2. Do you know a good source of plenty/easy tsumego?
I've heard it's also a good training to do easy tsumego real quick. Problem is that I lack problems to do.
There's only so many times you can do GGPB 1 and 2 (the answer is 4 times) before you get sick of it. I've tried to do encyclopedia of ...

http://chess.com is really good. You can practice tactics and it's easy to get live or correspondence games.

Re: How did you solve this problem?

I am trying to move more carefully-explore-the-tree reading into instinctive knowledge, and your answers to this question would be helpful in figuring out how to do so. Please keep answers in hide tags (at least for now) so other people aren't spoiled.

At least in my own practice I've decided ...

Windows only. The promotion system is similar to Tygem's and like Tygem the ranks are softer. I like how pros have an easy to spot badge.

Re: More success for women

P.S. Charlie, Cho Hyeyeon isn't a new and upcoming pro, she was the #2 female in the world from late 90s to late 00s (m), dipped since (did she move to USA for while? she speaks fluent English), but is doing well again recently. She has done video commentary for some US Go congress events, and ...

Re: Playing vs reviewing games + tsumego!

As for normal books: I'm struggling a bit with those. Haven't looked at any pro games either so far. But I'll probably create a topic about non-problem books in the future if I can't figure out my issue with them.

The important thing is to separate books that are about enjoying the game and ...

Re: Playing vs reviewing games + tsumego!

Option 2: Review lightly!
Another approach would be to still review each game, but only spend 10-15 minutes on it, immediately after the game's finished. That leads to a lower quality / quantity of a review, but it's less time consuming. Let's say you can play up to 5-6 games a week this way ...

Re: Study Plan and Progress Tracking

I think especially for beginners like me, it is quite important to stick to some kind of a routine. The game i confusing and tough early on, I'm constantly losing and yet I have to make as much constant progress as possible to get out of this phase.

For what it's worth I'm not entirely ...

Re: Learning Tesuji

I was wondering how any of you learn tesuji?
For example; I have the book 'Tesuji' from the Elementary series. But I find it hard to learn much from it. So how do you use a book like that to learn to see the tesuji in your own games?

I think more recent books are probably better resources than ...

The Go iPhone apps I use all the time (roughly in order): SmartGo Books, WBaduk (great tsumego collection), SmartGo Kifu, GoQuest, Pandanet.
