How could you not agree? Chess softwares are 400-800 elos away from perfect play. Go is a much more complicated game. The reason why humans could last so long in chess is just due to draws being an option. Even now one might get one.
Wouldn't perfect play will always win against imperfect opponent ...

Re: Human level far below the optimum
In conclusion, computer go is nowhere close to optimal play.
I do not agree.

Lulullul 5k plateau... I would very surprised if the normal plateau was at as low as 5d.

Re: AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, who will win?
the best pair is 4d.
I didn't check your math, so there could be multiple points of failure, but one thing you didn't take into account of is the number of games they have on record for each rank. They have a significantly fewer number of 9d games than 4d games, for example.

Re: AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, who will win?
Check the user mr5d I just made using your strategy, ranked below Uberdude on the 95% confidence interval offset that sorts the leaderboard. Also Uberdude was quite a lot better on the first dozen or so guesses when I spent a long time trying to judge the level but then my score went down when I ...

Re: AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, who will win?
That reminds me, user 'maf' made a nice site where you can play this guess the players' rank game:
https://kyudan.net/
The problem with that site is you should always just guess 5d. They should give you a set of nine games each one representing one rank from 1 to 9 dan.
Eh? Guessing 5d as the ...

Re: AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, who will win?
We used to play a rank guessing game on KGS, where a player would find a random game, play 50-100 moves, and have the other people guess what rank the players were. Many times people guessed pro games were 5k or 8k or 1-2d. It's amazing how bad we are at guessing ranks, even relatively more ...

Re: Why do some people never reach shodan
I don't accept your {John Fairbairn's} claim that studying pro games is efficient just because you say so - the strongest argument you've provided is not from your personal experience even, and is from what you observed of T Mark.
But I had a few extra arguments. Two top chess players plus the ...

Re: Why do some people never reach shodan
Not the most efficient but maybe very necessary. Like marathon runners very rarely run a marathon.
But they do very long runs. They don't work on their abs.
I don't run marathons myself, but I think it has been proven going to the gym is a must. I think they also do some cycling or swimming or ...

Re: Why do some people never reach shodan
Again, I'm not saying don't do dumb-bells or read tsumego books - a change of pace can be good, and nothing is ever truly wasted. Just don't pretend it's the most efficient way to become stronger for the skill you have chosen - playing a complete game of baseball, not acquiring six-pack abs for ...

Re: Why do some people never reach shodan
In chess I improved from 2000 level to 2200, aka a chess master, by just solving difficult problems. As a 3 kyu I once tried to replay pro go games on go4go but couldn't understand any of their moves. Felt like a completely waste of time. The owner of that website, though, improved a bit by putting ...

It took me 1-2 weeks to get to 10 kyu and one year to 3k kyu.

Re: trying to understand early resignation pro game
The game below is from the Honinbo preliminary league. Black resigns after only 76 moves, despite there being no super complicated fighting.
There's a ladder. Suppose :b77: at O4, White at O2, Black takes in the " ko ", White at P1. Black shouldn't connect. Therefore Black will have to grovel ...
