Re: Choi Cheol Han 9p vs Dwyrin

I imagine he gets most of his income from Patreon . It doesn't show directly how much support he gets, but it does say he has 233 supporters. If they are all at the bottom tier of $2.99 then that is about $650/month, but he is 3 goals past the one listed as $1k a month and 77% to the eighth. I don't ...

Re: dutchie's journal

I explored a bit with Katago. Concerning you wall, your mistake was at move 24. A general principle is to play urgent moves before big moves. You played :b24: at K3, this a big but doesn't threaten anything so is gote. On the other hand, after White played the marked stone, the corner group becomes ...

Re: dutchie's journal

I'm back! I've been playing off and on while I haven't been posting, and I have somehow managed to attain 7k on OGS. I think that's mostly because I'm higher ranked at correspondence than live, but I'll take it.

However, I just got destroyed by a 5k. A lot of my groups ended up dying, and there ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Thank you folks, a lot to think about. I honestly completely forgot that kick/pincer moves even existed, Direction of play and whole board thinking are so important!

Re: dutchie's journal

Again it's been too long. I've played (and lost) a couple tonight. One was a fun close fight that I ended up losing by 22.5. I'll attach it in case anyone is interested and wants to open up the SGF themselves for any comments, but I reviewed it with my opponent and I'm much more curious about the ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Huh, interesting analysis. I'm surprised W is down to only ~20% winrate after less that 20 moves!

Re: dutchie's journal

Thanks for the reviews all. Seems like I misevaluated the E3 cut at various points and need to play a little more forcefully.

Re: dutchie's journal

Another couple of games tonight. The second had aspects of a thing I've noticed happening somewhat often in my games where I just suddenly end up in the midgame with a bunch of influence and no territory and I do a terrible job of converting it all into points. Any tips and a review greatly ...

Re: dutchie's journal

So after that post, I went on a truly ridiculous losing streak, which must have been well over a dozen losses in a row by the end (counting the tournament). I don't remember how a lot of the games went now, and maybe I'll review them some other time, but I finally broke it on Tuesday and got another ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Sunday was the Bar Low tournament in London! It didn't go quite as well as I'd hoped; I decided that I'd be pretty happy if I could win half my games, but I ended up with a final record of 0-5. I didn't keep records of the games, but overall I think I struggled most with the time control. 25 minutes ...

Re: dutchie's journal

- move 13: yes, h17 normal locally, but play lower side fine too. White doesn't need to add a move, so it's not like you need to rush to punish him for being naughty.
- move 15: blocking is slow, you let white get 3-3 in sente; either extend to r9/q10 to help your group, or tenuki and be prepared ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Last night I went to the club up in Winchester for the first time, and it was great! It was in a very good pub close(ish) to the bus station, and I played a game against one of the members, an 8k, and also the club secretary is going to pass on email addresses for some other players closer to me in ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Today's game was with 2 stones handicap against a 7k, which I lost after a big group of mine died, and featured numerous other L&D mistakes. I definitely need to get the tsumego habit going again.

Re: dutchie's journal

Thanks as always for the thoughts, Knotwilg.

My routine's been a bit out of sorts recently, and certainly things like tsumego and playing have fallen by the wayside a little. But I was with some family in a board game café over the weekend and I talked us all into a little informal rengo and taught ...

Re: dutchie's journal

Here's a game vs another 9k where I spent most of it thinking I'd lost, to be amazed when KGS told me I'd won by 7.5. I've gone through and reviewed it, and there's a nice little L&D puzzle at the end that I think could have been seki if I didn't defend my cut.
