Re: Shiratori Sumiko RIP

I had the privilege of playing a one-to-one (teaching) game with Shiratori Sensei at an early U. S. Go Congress, possibly the 4th one in Berkeley, California. She was there unofficially, as a tourist; Nakayama Sensei introduced me and she offered a game. I remember her as kind and friendly and she ...

Re: taisha fail

well, only two days until the us go congress, so i decided to forget about what the computer thinks, and play what i want. it's too late to change my preferences at this point anyway. i'm just going to play what i want to.

When Takemiya attended the US Go Congress he gave a lecture in which he ...

Re: #231 drmwc vs Joaz Banbeck

I read a while ago (maybe in a Kageyama book? Or maybe the Treasure Chest Enigma?) that if your opponent spends 1 hour on a move, you should spend 2 hours on the response.

I moved in November 2017; and the reply was May 2019. So I think that give me 3 years for the next move, or a May 2022 target ...

Re: Genjo-Chitoku now available

I bought a copy. It's a wonderful book, a very valuable contribution to go literature. I like historical go and the surrounding cultural milieu and this book gives me a lot of that. I have Yoda's book of some 18 commented games of Chitoku, published by the Nihon Ki-in, and I have Yata Naoki's book ...

Re: Sad news

Sad loss indeed. I heard of his illness some time ago but nothing recently and hoped that he had recovered but ... I enjoyed meeting him (and John Fairbairn) during a visit to London a few years ago. His contribution to the game he loved and to the world go community was immense.

John: Re books of essays by Nakayama, Jitsuroku Igo Kodan was the basis for The Treasure Chest Enigma . There are also Gokyo Monogatari and Igo no Sekai which have similar essays and stories. A few choice essays from Gokyo Monogatari were translated into English and published in Go World issue 50 ...

Re: museum of natural history pix

The picture is a little out of focus. I went to the Museum of Natural History in New York City 24 years ago, during the fifth U. S. Go Congress, with Nakayama Noriyuki 6p and Takagi Shoichi 9p, both of whom were very knowledgeable about Go history. And we saw a go board with a game position on it ...

Re: Basic Techniques of Go

This was the first go book I had after Arthur Smith's book, in other words my first real go book. I learned a tremendous amount from it and even now, for serious students of the game I still recommend it highly. I particularly remember the material on tesuji. This book covers a lot of ground in a ...

Re: The Life of Honinbo Shuei

I was wondering when your final volume of the Honinbo Shuei trilogy in supposed to be released, "The Commentaries of Honinbo Shuei"? I believe "The Life" was released in May of last year, followed by "The Games" vols. in June, July, September and November.

I am writing this between proofreading ...

Re: The Games of Honinbo Shuei, Volume 3

I have bought all the Shuei books. I tend to follow the policy of buying every English go book I want right away when they come out, even if I won't read them for some time, because go books in English tend to go out of print fairly rapidly. An interesting question is whether e-books, say in Kindle ...

Re: What's wrong with go book publishers?

The issues concerning go book publishing have been aired many times on these boards. Slate and Shell is barely able to operate and must sell enough (full price) copies of any new book to cover its costs before it can publish the next book. I imagine circumstances are not much different for Kiseido ...

Re: Richard Bozulich RIP

His passing is certainly a great loss to the go world. I, too, acquired my go addiction through his publications and I, too, owe him a great debt of gratitude. I never met him in person but I had some helpful correspondence with him and I feel I knew him through the style of the Ishi Press and ...

Re: Bookshop Survey

In fairness.. if you went to a bookshop (other than a University bookshop) you wouldn't find many books on physics or maths at a high level..

You would in London. You can find shops with a shelf-ful of books on baseball, which amazes me. The game is virtually non-existent here. Yet Foyles has ...

Re: Farewell Sakata, we'll miss you

Sakata broke Takagawa's streak of 9 straight wins of the Honinbo title and went on to hold it for seven straight times. He was the first person in modern times to hold the Meijin and Honinbo titles at the same time. He had wonderful fighting spirit. There is a good story involving him in Nakayama's ...

Re: P.A.M Dirac and go at Princeton

The mathematician Ralph H. Fox played go at Princeton at around the crucial time. He got his Ph.D. there in 1939 so his graduate studies must have begun some years before that. The biographical sketch at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Fox describes him as "popularizing" the game of go at Princeton.
