Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Although I was in no hurry to build such a PC and expected a calm situation in January, chances increase that I (and millions others) need to wait 1/2 or 1 year after the paper launch on September 17. More than daily checking of availability does not help.
If you need to buy everything new, it ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
So from a purely pragmatic point of view, I'd say what you want to do you can do with almost any card, a 1080TI will be plenty, a 2080 will be way ahead of any 9 dan, from what I gather. Pros streaming katago games take like 3 stones handicap, so in an even game, I doubt they have a chance even ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Interesting comparison, and sounds pretty correct to me. I'll wait for the AMD announcements, which will at least lower the GPU prices overall, and maybe they have something interesting with tensor cores in the pipeline (which I doubt).

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Thanks @wineandgolover. From what I gathered about CUDA under Linux, yes, it seems a bit tricky.
I asked on the github page of kata about the tensor core support, and someone there said that Kata now supports tensor cores also with the OpenCL version, and that performance is very similar. So no ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
AFAIK, tensor cores are essential also at runtime to get fast speed and RTX 3000 is better than RTX 2000 at that.
I know nothing about the lag issue.
As to Ryzen, I consider 3700X, 3900X, some XT, 5800X, 5900X or await a still unannounced 5700X. XT may require a suitable mainboard or UEFI update ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
Which of the MB's is compatible with the 5900X?
AMD said that all 500 mainboards will be able to run the new Ryzen 5000 series. But you probably will need to update the BIOS (and on most boards you'll need a CPU for that, but some (I think MSI) will be updateable without a CPU). Even most ...

Re: Nvidia RTX 30xx
I'm planning on buying a better card solely for Katago. My budget is around 300-400, so a 5600XT or a RTX 2070 is what I'm looking at right now... maybe a 3060 or 3070 if they come out soon.

Re: Tygem Premium?
I was wondering the same thing. The premium servers are free obviously, but why are they called "premium"? I don't see any difference to the other servers. Maybe something fancy about betting? Would be interesting to know.

Re: Maybe the upcoming AlphaGo Teaching Tool is not what it
Just wanted to add: relax, people. AlphaGo has paved the way, but it won't be the end of the road. Crazystone and Leela have already implemented NN techniques, and those are done by single programmers. And they are already very strong programs. I bet there will be many groups that will be inspired ...
