Perhaps the (open source) GNU Go engine is the strongest engine before MCTS. The latest version is from 2009 and it may be about 6k KGS.

Re: What's in a name?
I'm not a native English speaker.
Due to a lack of grammatical inflexion in English, you probably need to consider word order to convey which adjective applies to which noun.
"Quzhou International Friendly Children Amateur Weiqi Invitational Tournament"
This word order suggests that "friendly ...

Re: PGETC with Skype
As far as I understood, this was already a requirement last year (although the EGF notification to team captains about this requirement only came after the teams registration process was nearing completion, I had heard it was coming beforehand) and I didn't apply to join the Dutch PGETC team because ...

So you're currently almost 4 months in of the 1 year period you gave yourself to rise from 3k OGS to about 2d OGS.
How do you feel it's going? Do you feel that you're still on track to reach your goal?

Re: EGC 2024 13x13 Komi
This may change in the future. A few years ago the AGM of the EGF accepted a motion to include 13x13 and 9x9 in the rating system, I think to allow particularly youth and beginners to play rated tournaments on smaller boards.jlt wrote:Anyway 13x13 tournaments are not even EGF-rated.

Re: EGC 2024 13x13 Komi
So it seems that the 13x13 handicap was roughly 1 full stone per 4 ranks? I'm not surprised that this handicap was disadvantageous for black. I think 13x13 handicap should be more like 1 full stone per 2 or 3 ranks.
I have been using 1 full stone per 2 ranks in my youth club in the past, but ...

Re: EGC 2024 7d Upset Losses
When a strong 7d player from Korea scores consistently better than expected for 7d EGF (like a lot more than 85% wins against European 5d players), their rating in the EGD will gradually increase.
This has happened with some strong Korean amateurs who lived in Europe for many years and participated ...

Re: EGC 2024 7d Upset Losses
Over the past 15 years, the EGD has recorded 235 wins out of 1789 even games (14.1%) between 5d and 7d, and the EGD also expects a 15% winrate for even games between a nominal 5d (GoR 2500) and a nominal 7d (GoR 2700).
Those percentages are similar to what is observed and expected for even games ...

Re: How fast can I rise?
I'm hoping for 2 or 3 dan.
I'm hoping for 7 dan, but I know that I won't actually spend the effort required, because I have a job, a family and I'm running a youth go club in my spare time.
So realistically, for me that 7 dan is more a dream than an ambition.

Re: How fast can I rise?
OK, if you already reached 1d in the past then reaching it again in 1 year seems a lot more realistic.
But I think setting your goal much higher is setting yourself up for disappointment.
And what would be the point even to set such a goal?

Re: How fast can I rise?
I consider it realistic when several players have done it before (albeit a small number of players).
I think 3k to 1d in a year is ambitious but realistic.
Similarly, improving 1 rank per year in the low dans is ambitious but realistic.
I know of only one player (Catalin Taranu) who reached 4d ...

Re: Gote move vs sente move in yose
If I made no mistakes in post #28 , I'll try to fix the mistakes my post #24 along the same lines.
As C is a sente follow-up of A for white, and sente gains nothing, A would have the same count as C: count = -5. I suppose that would be the gote count of A.
And B (with count 2) would be a reverse ...

So can we say that this position has count 2, because white has a sente sequence to reach that count and 'sente gains nothing'?
