Re: The Psychological Edge

Perhaps when you're as strong a player as Araban, but for a weak player like me my emotional state influences me - "hmm I don't know if I can invade there, ho hum I guess I'd probably die...- I won't bother" being a typical failing, or "oh it's midnight, I'm tired and will probably lose" - before I ...

Re: The seed's of go

Does it really matter if it's fake or real?

not at all. POGO, it's not a case of calling you a liar - honestly that's too serious a term for what I meant. It's an interesting thread and all but this is the Internet - you could be a 99 year old lady from Africa, the reincarnation of inigo-weiqi or ...

Re: The seed's of go

So many people's doubts would be gone.

I vote for fake too. Sorry POGO, but even your post on the age thread seems a little fictional - no offence intended. I was being a bit naive I guess.

31. That seems about right, though I'm as fit as I was at 20 and the same weight with no health problems at all. Just none of the teenage angst etc :D

Re: Go Review Archive finally available

Other than the cost could someone offer a comparison of the two? - i.e. is it obvious to people who've read both (I've read neither) that Go Review was the 'golden era' of publishing and that if someone had $100 to spend they should spend it on one of the GR DVDs (and save the difference) rather ...

Re: Software for writing Go books

One more vote for LaTeX. Yes it does produce nice output but there are some other reasons I think. LaTeX will keep track of numbering your figures very nicely. Delete one figure and all the rest get renumbered. You can give a figure a label in the code, then instead of remembering "figure 123" you ...

Re: At which level should you get to a Go Club?

I am going to be controversial here and state my strongly held opinion:

There is no requirement to go to a Go club at any level!!!

This might surprise some people, but that's what I believe.
Practically it means this: If you feel like going to a club, go, if you don't, don't, regardless of rank ...

Re: What's wrong with suicide?

I like the no-suicide rule, it seems more natural to me.

Still if you do want to play that way you can always play with New Zealand Rules or SST rules (which the Go player's Almanac 2001 informs me allow suicide).

Re: The seed's of go

Wow! Given that he's only 16 months old that's pretty (no - completely) amazing. Poor guy who got wiped out by someone who can't type yet

edit: My little girl's doing the same sort of thing as topazg's (she's 33 months).

Re: Improving Life & Death?

Cho Chikun's 'all about life and death' is a lot nicer to read than the Elementary Go series L&D. Of course being OOP it's hard to get and expensive.

Re: Do you regularly read non-go books?

I used to read hundreds. Most of the 'classics' - Don quixote, Moby Dick etc and modern literature. Also quite a few non-fiction - History of modern Surgery for example, philosophy (e.g. Foucault), religion and science unrelated to my day job. Since getting into Go (about 2 & a half years ago, and ...

Re: The seed's of go

It is going to learn an instrument at early age - that's why I hate playing the trumpet

Seriously though - is being a Go professional that good a job? I love Go, I want to play it until I die, but I'm glad I got some proper qualifications and I wouldn't wish that on my little girl. I'm going to ...

Re: Domain Name

Sure, I understand what the full name is , I was suggesting it as a possibility based on how I'd abbreviate it in conversation, or in posts - avoiding the mouthful factor. Perhaps I spend too much of my working day with acronyms though.

Having 19 in the name isn't too bad IMHO even though it ...

Re: Domain Name

I like "L19".. not very descriptive I suppose but I can imagine saying to someone "yeh I spent all morning reading L19 .. glad my boss didn't catch me" - if I could read it at work . I'm not really old or really young but it sounds more young than Godiscussions without being embarrassingly so. Also ...
