Re: The Game of Go and Enlightenment

It seems I don't really fit in very well with the culture of this forum. Y'all take it easy.

Re: The Game of Go and Enlightenment

Applebaps, I don't mean this as an ad hominem, but the games you play in your club which you like for their "enlightened/peaceful" style would almost certainly make a stronger player like myself baulk at their inefficiency.

Also when a game appears peaceful to the casual observer ir does not mean ...

Re: The Game of Go and Enlightenment

I think I see what you're driving at. If I understand you correctly, you're saying that in competition, violence is necessary in order to truly inhabit that mindset correctly, that we shouldn't shy away from fighting or that it doesn't indicate an unenlightened state.

On paper, I don't disagree. By ...

The Game of Go and Enlightenment

m

Found this article from 20 years ago on Tricycle. I'm curious what you all think of it.

Personally, I think it's nice to be agreed with, but ultimately the state of the game is pretty far removed from this enlightened ideal these days. The AI revolution has definitely made things worse in this ...

Hey there, welcome! I'm from Alaska, can I convince Canada to buy us off the States? Thanks in advance.

Re: Coffee break game: Zhou Lanyu - Guo Bailing

Wow this game is pretty cool. It's interesting to see the way these ancient players look at the board, how they just squeeze into tiny spaces. It's actually not far off from the hyper-territorial era we find ourselves in now! The fighting spirit here is incredible. Even a peaceful builder like me ...

Re: reviewing SL articles using LZ and criticism

RE: the complications invited by AI play - this is the crux of why I tend to look askance at AI's advice, to be honest. At a fundamental biological level, our brains are built "to keep us alive", not "to play Go". AI's brains are built from the ground up "to play Go." Chess had this same problem ...

Re: Mainstream Go Sightings

Back in 2014 there was this amazing little film called The Divine Move. I saw it on Netflix subtitled. It's about bangneki gamblers/cheaters and a violent conspiracy, with the game in close focus throughout. There's an amazing bit later on involving an ironic deathtrap where the code to get out is ...

Huh, this looks pretty neat! It's interesting that living shapes can be so chunky and fat, haha. Might be cool to play a few games of this some time.

Re: reviewing SL articles using LZ and criticism

Also, a lot of "outdated" techniques still work just fine against human opponents. I know from firsthand experience that psychologically-motivated moves/styles often render an opponent weaker than they otherwise would be. It won't work on a bot, but I'm not playing bots, so who cares?
Now here's ...

I don't think there's any reason to throw out your library. We're not Leela Zero, we're human beings who can benefit from reading those books. But we're already diving deeply into this topic in a thread you linked in your post, haha.

Re: reviewing SL articles using LZ and criticism

Too many good posts to quote them all! I'm enjoying this discussion, as it gets right to the root of why we play this game we (presumably) love. I think, on some level, the AI revolution has forced us (the last bastion of humanity's superiority to AI, in a way) to finally question ourselves in the ...

Re: reviewing SL articles using LZ and criticism

This criticism surprises me because it suggests we should continue to rely on pro advice even if it is refuted today by LZ, because we are allegedly unable to understand LZ (or bots in general). I would say that we have equal tentative understanding of Dosaku, Shusaku, Go Seigen or AlphaGo, while ...
