Re: Entertaining puzzle
The question is really asking whether you'll end up with an odd or even number of people at the end, since 2 == 0 for the purposes of this question. If the selection process is random, you can do all sorts of calculation to determine exactly how many people will be killed on average given a number ...

Re: Entertaining puzzle
attempt at more rigorous computation.
lets assume that we throw a weighted coin wich falls on tail with proba p, on head with proba q=p*r, and on the edge with proba
1-p-q
We will throw the coin until it falls on either head or tail.
what is the proba that it ends up on head ?
lets compute the ...

Re: Entertaining puzzle
This does not really answer the OP question: the crazy duellist repeat the process until 1 or 0 are left!
each time, they have a proba of (1/e)^n of all dying, very small
but the proba of 1 survivor is n* (1/e)^(n-1) (1-1/e)
so P(1 left after this round)/P(0 left after this round ) is of order n ...

i am not sure i agree with DrStraw on the lack of merit of the proof the 4 color theorem http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=191175#p191175 , but for this problem I have to ask: what is the point ?

for game 2:
notice how black has 2 big territories : up right and bottom + left.
How do they came to be ?
i like to ask myself those questions when i auto analyse my games.
for the bottom:
lets have a look around move B have position on the right and left, normal as he received handicap.

Re: math problem (easy), algo problem (dunno if easy)
All very nice, Perceval, but it sounds a bit like using a slegehammer to crack a peanut. Good mathematics is simple and elegant. This sounds complex and inelegant as compared to the polar coordinates solution.

Re: math problem (easy), algo problem (dunno if easy)
Funny how the discussion went in places i did not think about.
My question was, indeed, about integer coordinates, I just put in on a goban because its the thing to do here to interest peoples.
my proof was close the one in the link by RBerenguel, ie using only pythagore theorem and arriving to ...

math problem (easy), algo problem (dunno if easy)
I couldnt sleep last night, and a question poped into my head:
Can you place 3 stones on a goban ( on goban intersections of course) so that the resulting triangle is equilateral ? (Lets assume the goban is infinite); Either give an example or a proof its impossible
When a question like that ...

I am trying to force myself to take fights when they seem at least even, to fight my natural go cowardice, but i was worried that my radar was a bit off and i didnt realize the fight was in fact not good, around move 20 but if i understand correctly, my play around moves 20-28 was ...

"fought his madness" sounds a bit over dramatic, trying to bring back memories of "a beautiful mind".
