From the paper, the game time was 1 hour main time + 30s byo-yomi. This is no blitz trick.

This is huge. I hope somebody with Nature access can give us some details about under what conditions the games were played.

The article is particularly unclear and unhelpful. Look at the table on page 5 of the actual paper and you should understand what's going on. Basically because you're flipping a coin 4 times in a row, and looking at streaks only in those 4. Then repeating again, you add some bias to your experiment ...
