But if I needed something for go, it could be e.g. Miserere by Allegri. The Tallis scholars have made a nice CD with the aforementioned piece that I got a couple of weeks ago.

Palestrina, Josquin and Allegri are all favourites of mine, and I've got some amazing recordings by the Tallis Scholars. :) If you're not familiar with Carlo Gesualdo, you might like him as well.

Gesualdo as go music? Half of his songs are about dying, for chrissakes. (that said, La Venexiana's recording of his fifth book of madrigals is one of my favorite albums)

I've never even tried having music on while playing—I can't imagine it doing anything but distracting.

I don't listen to music during go. In fact, I almost never have background music on; either I make music, listen actively, or enjoy the silence.

Anyhow. Lately my brain has apparently revolted against this silence. Now I regularly have short music fragments repeating in my head throughout long tournament games. Such as Tetris A. Or the Pippi Longstockings theme. Or Black Hole Sun. On repeat. For hours.

Funnily enough, my go doesn't suffer from it. In fact, it even brings me into a good mood for some deep calculation :)

I used to use Kylie Minogue & Britney Spears to cope with Go-stress  Hard to worry too much about dying with those two singers.

It's funny you mention this, cause I've had a similar experience. I never listen to music when I play, as I find it distracting. Sometimes I'll still have music playing when I start a game, but as soon as I have to focus for serious reading the music has to go off. I guess my brain has similarly revolted, because often when I'm playing, especially in person, I'll have a 10 second music fragment that will just keep repeating in my head. As soon as I finish the game I'm playing, I have to immediately listen to the song to exorcise the demons. One day my head will just explode

Anything around 120bpm works for me. No lyrics though, those are distracting.

I prefer a real fire, and in British Columbia we don't need the rain loop (something isn't right when it's pouring on June 1), but that's a nice song :).

I used to listen to music when I played Go (anything from classical pieces and piano arrangements to heavy metal), but I found that I made less mistakes when not listening to music. I also found that I would often hit the pause button whenever some heavy reading was required, especially if the music had lyrics.

Actually, this thread inspired me to write a little more about connections between Go and music, please see here if you are interested: http://www.allaboutgo.com/articles/go-and-music/

Hmm, good to hear that is happening to others, I thought it was just me :P.

Personally, I don't usually listen to music when I play Go. It subtracts from my limited concentration lol. However, when I do, which is rarely, listen to music while playing Go, I'll listen to Muse! Awesome band.

I can recall listening to "The Resistance" when playing Go once. I felt a little proud when I successfully resisted my opponent's forcing moves after hearing the line "They shall not force us" :P

Bad if the forcing move your opponent plays *needs* to be answered, though.

I usually play with a relaxing music, but very rarely with a song. I prefer to listen to the 'song' of waves on a beach =)

My roommate likes to watch sports with the TV up quite loud, so I've gotten in the habit of putting on some Andy McKee when playing go online.

He's a solo guitarist, who is INSANELY good. No lyrics to distract me from the game, and it's a really soothing/exciting (yes, at the same time) style of music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4 - watch his right hand closely; all the "percussion" you hear is him drumming his fingers on or slapping the side of the guitar while he plays hammer-ons with his left hand. Amazing.

Haha, yeah. I would be rocking to the music, then something would happen in the game, and I'd turn it off. Music doesn't work with Go for me.

I've been listening to this playlist during work, and thus, during my Malkovich games.

I listen to christian contemperary, alternative, rock, and rap. I find that listening to my favorite songs gives me control over my emotions when I make a mistake or blunder.
