So, for those of you replying to my recent posts - thank you! I've been working hard to finally set straight in my mind the precise differences in scoring, counting, and strategy related to the various rulesets. My question now is simple (well, simply stated, though it requires expert knowledge to answer authoritatively): What do we know of the evolution (historical) timeline of go rules? How should the following rule elements (SEE BELOW) be combined and put in chronological order of usage? Do we even know for sure? Deviant lines of evolution in Japan and China? Simultaneous usage in certain historical periods? Does Korea (or any other geographical areas) play a significant part in this history? a. stone scoring b. group tax c. area counting d. area scoring e. territory counting f. territory scoring g. need for equal moves h. pass stones for equal moves i. not playing/removing black's last stone to insure equal moves j. equivalence counting k. --> other ruleset elements? For example, I believe there was a time when Japanese style territory counting was used but they still accounted for group tax and required equal moves (so, thats elements a, b, e, g all together at one time. What goes before and after that way of scoring on a history timeline? I suppose its mainly just laying out what happened in what Chinese dynasties and what was happening in Japan over the centuries. I feel a bit sheepish asking all this since its quite a bit, and I have read much of what is already available online, BUT I keep running into comments that include many maybes and ifs (understandable, of course) but just wondering if someone more familiar with the subject is able to give a simple overview of what is known. Heavy topic, but hey - thats better than reading yet another kyu player's L19 study journal post (yikes, sorry - maybe that's insensitive). Thanks! |

Ancient: Stone scoring Territory plus prisoner scoring, with group tax Recent: Equivalence counting, with pass stones |
