hi everyone, new member here, so, I starting playing go about a year ago but as a Med student I have very little free time (it's getting worse next year) I always put the books over the board to remember that I must play Go :D (but sometimes there are so many of them that they cover the board :cry: ) :D my goal in life is to be like Mikhail Botvinnik (both awesome chess player and engineer!) I go to a Go club where a guy is improving really fast, I talk to him and he doesn't work nor studies, just plays go! (he is not the only one) :-?
do you have any similar problems with duties and go?
an old gentleman at the club said "study and family moves you away from go, when you retire you can play all you want" :cry:

It's about priorities.

There are generally two reasons people work on things:
* To gain benefit
* To avoid pain

Things that are meaningful to you bring you benefit when you study to improve. You are improving your life by working on them, because you are improving an area that means something to you in your life. Things to avoid pain are things that you *have* to do, even though you don't like them - taking out the garbage, work responsibilities that please your manager, but don't bring you closer to your own goals, etc.

Generally speaking, I personally prefer to prioritize things that bring benefit to my life, rather than things that are just to avoid pain. Practically, this means that you should spend time working toward things that are meaningful to you.

How important are your goals in being a good medical student? Will being a good medical student bring benefit to your life - or are you just aiming to do whatever is necessary to avoid failing? How important is it to you that you play go well? You should think deeply about these questions, and plan your time accordingly.

I agree with what Kirby said.

Additionally on the part of someone improving by just playing go; for newer players this is pretty common, I don't think too many people start actually studying until they're looking towards joining the ranks of the SDKs.

I’d also say focus on mastership in the discipline that’s more important for your life and leave the other as a hobby, for the time being. Mastership in your other interests will come at their times.

oh sorry I think I did not explain myself well :) (not an english native speaker) I mean, he just plays Go, he doesn't work for a living or goes to college (NEET I think it's the word)

I completely agree with Bonobo's post. But being an ex-Med student, I can tell you your career is much more important. However, you should take into account that once you finish your medical studies you'll have more spare time. This is during your specialist training or afterwards.

So, personally, I would focus more on my studies and, on spare time, play some Go. Try not to get annoyed about your Go improvement. You've got other priorities first, just take it as a nice and funny hobby.
