About Fujisawa Hosai, gobase says: born 1919-03-05, died 1993-08-02.
SL says the same, and so do the English Wikipedia and lots of other sources.
However, past experience shows that Western sources are not independent, and anybody can edit SL and Wikipedia.
Go World, the Summer 1992 issue, tells us that Fujisawa died August 2nd, 73 years old.
Investigation of other sources gives the strong impression that 1993 is wrong, and should be 1992.
That is also what the Japanese Wikipedia says.
So far about the date of death. The Japanese Wikipedia gives the birthdate as 1919-03-09. Perhaps that is also more correct than 1919-03-05?

Around that time Go World was notoriously late in getting issues out. It is possible that it was actually a year late. I don't recall if one was as delayed as that. Perhaps someone with a better memory can help.

Hmm, if Go world in 1992 was a year late, wouldn't that mean he died in 1991?

Not if it were printed in 1993.

What will you accept as correct?

From the GoGoD Onomasticon:

FUJISAWA HOSAI [Fujisawa Housai]
Male. (1919-03-09 ~ 1992-08-02, Yokohama) Professional at Nihon Ki-in Main Branch except 1953~59 as an independent after unsuccessfully pursuing two ten-games matches with Go Seigen and being accused of neglecting his Nihon Ki-in responsibilities. He left voluntarily but was voted back unanimously on 1959-02-06. Pupil of Honinbo Shusai. Insei 1930, 1d 1933-04, 2d 1933 (after winning all his games in the Autumn Oteai), 3d 1934, 4d 1935, 5d 1938, 6d 1940, 7d 1942, 8d 1946, 9d (first ever by Oteai system) 1949-06-15. Retired in 1992. He changed his name from Fujisawa Kuranosuke at the beginning of 1957 on the advice of Suzuki Etsu. Step-nephew (though older) of Fujisawa Hideyuki, and son of a daughter of Fujisawa Jugoro (son-in-law married into family). Uncle of Kojima Takaho. Known as a very slow player - he once held the record of 213 minutes for one move. Latterly served as a Nihon Ki-in director. Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (IV) in 1991. Another source has birth date 03-05.

See also my "9-dan Showdown" for much more detail, especially about his dispute with the Ki-in, and why he changed his name.

What is correct? Nobody knows, but it helps to have a few independent sources. In these internet days most on-line sources are not independent.

A correct Western source. Good, thanks!
