If you are happy with a some thousand year old game, you can probably cope with ten year old pages, no?

If by "modern" you mean "bogged down with Flash", embedded video on every second page and plenty of fluff amd glitter distracting from the actual information, then I prefer the "1990s style" (it makes me feel old that the 1990s are used as an example for something ancient!).

I visit web sites for the information they offer, not for their appearance. There's nothing wrong with simplicity. (And let me just mention that sites in 1995-98 didn't at all look like what you refer to as the style of the 1990s. :))

Yeah, I realised too late that he was a shiny new baby troll, not a grown one of the Strawus Belua family of quite advanced and highly intelligent trolls. :)

http://igolocal.net/ <-- Definitely makes use of modern web technologies. There are others as well. But yeah, many Go sites seem to have a simple approach relying more on pure coding (HTML, PHP, etc) rather than slick graphics. So what? ;)

Its a shame, that some people seem to live only to try and ruin things for others. I actually think that there are some fantastic Go sites out there that feature functional designs, clear content and are not bandwidth hogs. Certainly some sites like goproblems.com and the Interactive Way to Go make effective use of modern tools to be a great learning resource for guys like me :).

Are we really sure we're not jumping the gun just a little too quickly here?

Maybe he's a great go player who will eventually make significant contributions to our community, but he just really, really hates ugly websites.

I also think it's a bit on the quick side, but I won't miss any of these...

search.php?keywords=&terms=all&author=dmxdawg&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

I think the warning would have to be given for
"hey don't sweat it! go clubs are for loozers anyways"
and this great one
"i just own you and win by res. why don't you spend more time playing games then you wouldn't be so weak"

It's a troll, and a rather weak one. Just check his other posts.

yeah, I saw them.

he just sounds like he's 13 years old, which doesn't necessarily mean he's a troll.

It was pretty clearly an account registered just for trolling, so there was no reason to treat them any differently than a spammer. If it were a long-standing member breaking the rules here or there or having a bad day, they would have gotten a warning.

Yeah, if this was the only post, banning would be questionable. But every single post the guy made was ridiculous, including one which was deleted from the Malkovich section, which insulted the game between cloud and Shaddy.

While the original poster might've been a troll, I do have to agree on topic. It seems Go world definitely has it's share of ugly web sites and application UIs.

For those who like to argue that they like "simple and working UIs and not graphical gimmicks", I challenge them to defend e.g. Kiseido's or Het Paard's http://www.schaakengo.nl/ web page designs, or the dozen terrible excuses that are called IGS clients (some Mac ones do not suck too hard, though). :)

I think it has to do with the fact that many of the sites are built by enthusiasts who are not web designers by profession, and the sites don't make any money so there's no incentive to pay anyone to design the site. Similar effect is visible on many electronics web sites - both hobbies attract technical people who can make web sites but usually care less about aesthetics. It's a bit of shame, as following just few simple guidelines would make the websites / UIs usually much better (like: do not use neon colors, an hour spent on improving the UI will save a thousand for others, etc.)

I think it is fair to invoke Sturgeon's Law here (Named after Theodore Sturgeon, an important writer of Science Fiction from the mid-20th century). To adapt it to go websites; Yes, 95% of all go websites are @#$&, but 95% of all websites are @#$&.

I think there is a difference though between functional old designs (which might look like they are from 1995, but still work very well), and designs that are bad no matter when they were written.

So long as a site does what is expected of it, it's alright if it's ugly.

If it doesn't, though, it doesn't matter how pretty it is.
