OTOH: byoyomi voice countdown -- they did a very nice job

I have to protest -- that character fell asleep watching a pro game! When has that ever happened in real life?

It happens around 1 PM every Sunday from April to September in my case. The early rounds of the NHK Cup on Japanese television are usually a guaranteed nap. :)

There's a bit later in the badlands, near where you first meet the fixer in that area, I think. A group of characters is watching two others play Go. There is some dialogue about the complexities of the game. Pretty sure it's the exact same board position as from that mission from the police-lass mission.

Koppelman and Levien enjoy games and have form writing in the argot of gameplayers accurately and impressively. They are the guys who wrote "Rounders", comfortably the best poker movie ever made. Doesn't surprise me that they made sure their Go scenes are passable.

I've heard somewhere that Paul Giamatti is a Go player, perhaps he helped to make it believable.

Just been watching Peacock's adaptation of "Brave New World" and Go features prominently in several scenes.

The stones they chose are pretty ugly, the games don't always look plausible in the close-ups, and there is a thematic reveal that uses the idea of a "suicide move" that doesn't super work as a metaphor.

The rest of the show isn't too bad though.

Yea, the Tron one was a physical set ( ? ) but Black Lotus's was rendered -- mismatched grid lines and stone sizes, and missing star points. :blackeye:

Currently reading The Eternal Zero (EIEN NO ZERO) by Naoki Hyakuta. Chapter 6 is heavily involving go.

This is a bit of a coming from the left field, but bear with me.

There's a Japanese anime series (mostly) called Patlabor. Basically, mechas become industrial equipment. Dangerous industrial equipment. And a branch of the police is set up to deal with them. So far, so good. In episode 46, however, there's an explanation-comparison of the old system for police mecha's OS, a system that learns from the pilot (a la AlphaGo), and a new "neural network" OS that reacts more generally to ANY pilot's movement and environment... Not quite AlphaZero, but...

The episode first aired in 1990. Cell animation is not something you can improvise a script and shoot it the week before.

Take care.

Kakegurui TWIN. Igo and Shogi are both mentioned! Along with Chess, Backgammon, Checkers, etc which are shown, and Mancala is also seen. I won't spoil it by describing what's going on here, but both contexts in which Igo equipment appears are very interesting, it's a Kakegurui prequel that's only 6 24 minute episodes long so well worth watching for the Igo context. The picture above shows Igo bowls next to a Shogi board, the scene below panes down to a 19x19 Igo board.

Wonder Egg Priority, the context strongly implies they're playing Igo not Gomoku!

'Never regret the stone once played', that advice will make a kyu player 5 stones stronger, I learned so much it felt like a 9 Dan Professional was teaching . . . Amazing!

In his interview with Steve Rinella of the hunting show MeatEater, Joe Rogan said, in the context of discussing the advanced state of China's military AI capabilities:

"They're comparing right now, like, computers now that can beat people in the game Go, which I don't really understand but apparently it's very sophisticated"

In the above pic, it is not Habu but Watanabe Akira (the shogi Meijin), and the pic is comparing the earnings of the top player in shogi (81,940,000 yen) and go (133,850,000 yen - almost a million dollars) in 2021 (which was a pandemic-affected year BTW).
