I mentioned in an earlier posting that I had been working through some Igo Kansai magazines. This game shows that even professionals make mistakes in their recording from memory, because we found that we had two copies of the same game, one in a Nihon Ki-in magazine and one in the Kansai, but the Kansai version omitted the 89-90 exchange shown here and added two extra moves at s13 and s9 at the end. The event was an East versus West Japan match in 1954.

Best wishes.

So K10 was played before K11? Surely white would then just push and cut?

Yeah, it does seem pretty likely that the :b89: - :w90: exchange actually occurred.

I assume White resigned after Black 111. Why?

Here is my 4-kyu analysis. :-?

If White lets Black capture at r8 then Black can either
win the capturing race with White's r11 group or live locally
along the right edge.

If White prevents the capture at r8, Black throws in next at q11.
After that, Black either captures at p10 and lives locally
or plays s14 to prevent White connecting under to the
top-right corner, after which Black wins the capturing race.
It does not help White to try for a ko around q11 because Black
then has time to put all the White stones around r11 into atari.

In every case, the White stones around o8 die, so White resigned.

Any improvements?

I'm sure it happened :) What I mean is, how could it occur to a pro replaying the game that the exchange could be left out? I know when I replay my games that getting the move order of remote forcing exchanges wrong is possible, but this is not some unrelated exchange, its critical to the meaning of the immediately following move.

My guess is that the transcriber was just hurriedly scribbling down the moves on a kifu, without paying too much attention. When you've recorded perhaps hundreds of games onto a kifu in the past, it probably wouldn't be something you focused too much on.
