Although the GoGoD database tends to avoid amateur games (and also internet games without real names), we do take a special delight in collecting games by future pros when they were still amateurs - which usually means they were also children. Despite both statuses, their play tends to display elements that mark them out from the rank of ordinary amateurs/children.

You saw a case recently, posted by T Mark, of young Yamashita Keigo at play. This example is Rin Kaiho's first ever game as an insei, or apprentice pro in 1953. He had just turned eleven.

In his autobiography, Rin described this part of his life as his salad days. He recounted that in the area of O-cha-no-mizu where they played, there were many places to for young people to play go, billiards or table tennis. He also learned shogi at this time, but he and good friend Kudo Norio, two years older but a fellow insei, constantly played ping pong. Once they went boating on the nearby Imperial moat at Akasaka and overturned while trying to change oars. Rin could not swim, but escaped, changing clothes at the nearby home of pro Murashima Yoshinori.

The GoGoD CD has a fairly extensive biograhy of Rin if that's your cup of o-cha.
