As I said yesterday, I have recently found some more games of Go Seigen to add to the collection. This is one played in 1943 against a go patron from Yamaguchi prefecture. The remaining games will appear in the near future in the GoGoD database.

Best wishes.

John posted a game of a player (Kinani, I think) playing a go patron. What is the traditional form/venue/arrangements for playing against a patron? Is there a game fee, or is it gratis as a way of saying thank-you for previous support? Is it a serious, one-on-one affair or would it be done quickly, at a party for example?

Usually the patron is paying for the privilege, including travel and lodging expenses, so they would be able to (respectfully) set the ground rules. They may sponsor a game or games between particular players and they would get to watch and sit in on the post-mortem. How serious they may take their own games would be up to them but they must have known that the professional may well publish with a commentary and, if they had taken it too lightly, they may not appear in the best manner.

Best wishes.
