This Shusai game is a bit of a rarity in couple of ways. For one thing, it is not in his Collected Games. But it is also a little unusual in that it is a game he lost in China. Shusai was ultra-sensitive to loss of face for Japan if he were to lose in China, and he soon learned to leave unfavourable games unfinished. This infuriated Iwamoto Kaoru, judging by comments in his autobiography, since the Chinese side put up rather large sums to make these games happen.

Gu Shuiru was probably the top Chinese player of the time, having earlier studied in Japan under Hirose Heijiro, and he was certainly top of the pile once Go Seigen went to Japan. He was given 4-dan by the Nihon Ki-in. He is sometimes credited with having two pupils, Go Seigen and Chen Zude. Go was not a formal pupil but has cited Gu as an important influence. His late career was marred by the Cultural Revolution.

Move 130 is uncertain.
