A co-worker has expressed an interest in learning the game better -- he's played before.

I've setup a board between our desks, but he'll only make a move (or even look at the board), when I'm not around. Its actually not the first time I've encountered this personality type -- but I don't understand it.

Well... It looks like he suffers from a form of anxiety. That's nothing extraordinary and the list of possible causes could fill an encyclopedia.

Some people don't like it when people watch what they're doing. They sometimes feel like they're being judged.

I actually like to watch my opponents’ faces, especially their eyes, and how they move accross the board. Also their mouths may give away a lot unintentionally. And the other way ’round, if I sense my opponent watch me, I ostentatively look at parts of the board that I’m currently not really interested in, and sometimes I look happy and sometimes I look sad

I like to stroke my invisible mustache with a crazed look in my eye to thwart fellows like you.

Hmm, Will Hunting Syndrome... I recommend a psychiatrist, possibly with roots in his community.
