Hello. I'm a beginner; I have played around 12 Go games in my life. I have a serious interest in learning Go to a decent level (I know than that's very subjective). I'm asking for recommendations as for the time settings (for the Fischer system) that you'd recommend to play in size 9, 13 and 19 for real time matches (Lasting a single continuous playing period). I'm aware that it's a compromise. Longer times allow for more thinking but can become tiresome at the end, decreasing quality of play, and fewer games can be played assuming that there is always people willing to play. I currently play mostly on size 13. Do you think that I should switch to size 19 already?. What are the differences? I suppose that it will be mostly increased match duration, emphasis on influence at the opening, and a more strategical, less tactical game game until the endgame.

Regards.

Start off with the small board until you are comfortable with it and them move up a size: only you can judge your comfort level. Start off with the fastest time you are comfortable with: there is a lot of truth in the saying Lose your first 100 games as quickly as possible.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Hi Mario, Welcome to Go and the forum! :)

I second what DrStraw said.

At your current phase -- If you think less than 2 seconds per move, it's too fast.
If you spend more than 1 minute on every move, that's too long.

Anything else in between is OK.

Finish your first 100 games as soon as possible. :)

After that, you can post your serious games here for review (or on KGS, etc.)

Have fun!

only 12 games in I'd recommend sticking to 13x13 unless you show some talent for the game and can beat a 10k or higher even at 13x13.
time settings I'd recommend 10 minutes a side with 10 second fisher time.
when you get to 19x19, time should be 20 minutes a side with 15 sec fisher time.
but ultimately you have to judge for yourself.
